I need help making my final EC list as I have too many in the activities slot, so for me to insert the following in the final list which ones should i remove?
TO INSERT :
What should I replace to put this EC in the list,
- Organizing and participating in fundraisers, raising an overall of $46,800 for the recent floods in _____ and for Children Hospitals in the US through Extra-Life.
- Created a website called _____ that helps teenagers dealing with stress and depression by matching them up with a stranger willing to help. It's also daily updated with motivational posts and related stuff.
Which two out of the following list should I remove?
- President of Student Council
OR
- Technical Director for my high school’s musical - ‘Shrek’
OR
- Professional Aerial Photographer
OR
- Founded an Initiative called Girls <3 Code.
OR
- Started a Summer Camp called ‘’ at __.
I like the sound of your website for anxious teens, but…is anyone using it?
Keep pro aerial photographer. Can you supplement with pics? This hpooby does sound like an interesting wild card.
You started a summer camp? Who goes to,it? What’s it about? I don’t get it, is it sleep away, etc? Sounds confusing.
Ditch girls who code, been done before. Preseident of sutdent council is sooooo common, but it’s leadership. Tech director more interesting, but what does that mean? Did you actually do stuff for Shrek?
I would stick with ECs that help reinforce your application in terms of,what you want to study, and the kind of person you are. A common theme is cool.
@Lindagaf The website has about 50-60 users daily so I guess it is helping out people, though not as many as I’d like it too.
Yeah I can supplement the pro aerial photographing thing with pics, have quite a few from concerts and other events.
It’s a summer camp for kids where I teach them animation, coding and robotics through a language called Scratch.
I managed the lighting/audio and special effects for the Shrek musical, we had a crew of over 200 people and an audience of around 2000.
i’m applying as a CS major btw so maybe the Girls <3 Code thing should stay?
If you have to get rid of two things, get rid of the two, that least fit with the rest of your app. Perhaps, that’s the aerial photography. With your intended major, and the other impressive things you have done, pres of student council is a cliche. That title is not, exclusive, and you have clealry taken a lead in other ways. It would have been ideal to,ask yiur guidance counselor to mention that in his/her rec, but too late for that.
@Lindagaf I’m pretty sure my counselor has already mentioned that I’m the President because I made it a point in the bragsheet i gave her. Do you think I should put in the fundraising thing as an EC or leave it in the Additional Info section as it doesn’t relate to my major?
For now, I’ll replace the President position with the website thing.
My understanding is that additional info section is to explain circumstances that can’t be addressed elsewhere. Things such as significant gaps in curriculum, grades dropping, family disruptions, extended illnesses, disciplinary issues, etc… I am not sure you are supposed to use it for stuff you can’t fit in to your activities section. However, if you were directly responsible for raising that large sum, then maybe you can mention it. Other CC’ers might know better.
I am wondering how many of these things you are directly and predominantly involved in. You don’t want to give ad coms a reason to doubt you. I have no idea about your grades and test scores. Hopefully your counselor recs will mention some of these things to give you credibility. Choose wisely.
No matter which you keep or delete, the most important thing is to make sure the descriptions are well written and descriptive with no grammar errors.
For instance did you raise money for the recent floods or did you raise it for flood victims?
Raising an overall of $46,800 - sounds awkward- needs rewording.
It’s also daily updated or It’s updated daily?
Matching them up with a stranger or matching them up with a trained volunteer?
Your list of ecs are commendable, just make sure you do them justice with your written descriptions.
@Lindagaf I was directly responsible for about $20,000 out of the entire amount, the other $26,800 I raised along with a team of other people through Extra-Life. I have a 31 on the ACT currently and expecting somewhere around a 33 in the ACT i wrote in December.
Here’s my grade breakdown : 79% in 9th 89% in 10th 94.33% in 11th and 94.5% in 12th. (I’m international)
I messed up in 9th because of some family issues which I already mentioned in the Addition Section, though I don’t know if i’ll be forgiven that easily.
@wisteria100 Thank you so much for your opinion! I’ll make sure I word all the descriptions to do my EC’s the most justice. If you don’t mind would you like giving me a hand with that?
Thank you everyone!
