Whats So Great About UD?

I'm a senior in Northern Virginia and though i have committed to UD, ive honestly wanted to know what made everyone who has attended/currently attending/or a parent absolutely love UD. I personally only know of another student who was accepted to UD and thats pretty much as far as the buzz goes down here. I've read a lot of facebook posts on the UD offical accepted page about people "loving UD so much they decided right away" and "im so excited to be attending". This post is in no way patronizing or insulting those people because i am super excited about college myself, but i just want to understand what makes UD great so that i could feel the pride too! Thanks for any personal insight. I will also be going to the april 12th decision day as my first UD visit.

@jy1995 just curious what made you choose Udel without visiting? My D will be attending this fall and is very excited as it was her #1. She had no desire to look into let alone visit Udel when I suggested it based on a close friends recommendation as an alumna. She felt it was much too close to home (nj). That visit changed everything. She immediately fell in love with the campus and all it has to offer. She is the type that needs to have something going on all the time and loves to be involved. I think she really liked how the campus was part of the town. It was not secluded like many other colleges we visited. As a parent, I felt Udel was a great choice for a business school. It is conveniently located to many major cities. Udel seems to have a great spirit. I would be curious to hear how you feel after you visit. We will be attending the 12th and are really looking forward to starting our Udel adventure.

Lack of other choices, primarily, as well as financial aid. After my visit ill come back to this post and elaborate on my experiences! I know it will be fun.

If you have decided to attend UD because of a “lack of other choices” IMHO you have “lucked out”. Besides a myriad of social/athletic opportunities at UD (and one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country) you will be attending a National Research Flagship State University that is identified among the top 75 National Universities in the country as ranked by USN&WR. The academics at UD are outstanding (but are very rigorous and challenging - so be forewarned). UD produces Fulbright Scholars, Truman Scholars, and Rhodes Scholars. Three years ago a chemistry professor was awarded a Nobel Prize. UD has particularly strong programs in engineering, nursing, education, business, Pre-Med/Pre-Vet, and psychology. UD graduates who do well have no problem getting into the top Professionl/Graduate Schools in the country. UD also is unique among all Flagship State Universities in that 2/3rds of the students are from OOS. This gives UD more of a private university flare as compared to most State Universities where the overwhelming majority of students are from in-state. UD has the oldest Study Abroad Program in the Country and its Honors Program is also ranked among the best in the Norteast/Mid-Atlantic area. UD is making great strides into it’s “Path to Prominence” Program led by its current President who prior to coming to UD was the Dean of the Wharton School at Penn. Hopefully all of this info can help you to begin to develop some sense of pride that you were accepted to a university the caliber of UD. Now all you have to do is to avail youself of all the opportunities UD offers its students. Don’t short-change yourself. Good luck.

Thank you @mwallenmd for the insight! you have tirelessly helped everyone out in the forum including me, and i appreciate it greatly.

My DD is about to graduate from UD and here are some of the things that made it one of her top choices (and were confirmed in her four years there).

Academics. We loved the variety of majors available - she went in undecided - had good advisors, mostly small classes, internship directly through her program, etc. She never had a problem getting into classes and grew so much in the four years. It was a perfect academic fit.

Beautiful campus - exactly what she thought college should look like.

Great college town - she loves Main St (and lives in a great apt on Main St now)

Happy students - it took her some time but she found her people

Easily accessible - away from home, but close enough and easy enough to go back and forth

The college experience she wanted - football, Greek life, concerts on campus

While she’s ready for work, she’s very sad to be leaving Newark in less than two months.

My son has a few days before making his final decision between UD and GW. He wants to study computer science and politics. He had been admitted to honors in both schools with substantial merit money. We really can’t decide-he loves the campus at UD but GW has a higher rating. Any thoughts?

I would assume that by this time you have objectively identified the pros and cons for both schools. If you are not able to decide based upon these findings (and I would guess that these probably could be debated ad infinitum) then it would be my perspective that it might be in your son’s best interests to consider attending the school where he feels subjectively that he best “fits in” with. This usually is a good foundation to start off with in college. Just my thoughts. Good luck to your son at whatever choice he makes. Both are excellent universities.

As a teacher of government and politics, I would say that you can’t beat studying political science in Washington, D.C. George Washington University is probably a better choice for his field of study. Good luck!
