I think location is a not inconsiderable factor in Harvard's large common admit edge over SYP.

Byerly, I read that article about the H-Bomb and I completely agree. I haven't even started college yet, but I still get some pretty standard reactions when i tell someone i'm going to Harvard (after trying to avoid it). The most common reaction is the "REALLY!?!?!?! You must be amazing" type of deal. Then I get the "How the hell did you do that? Aren't you sorta stupid" reaction (which i understand because i don't really show my intelligence when i'm out of the classroom). but i also get a lot of the "oh Harvard. Yeah, i would never go there. too many elitist preppy kids" reaction, too. so basically, dropping the H-Bomb is the most uncomfortable thing for me. sometimes i wish i was going to Ohio State so that I didn't have to face awkward conversations and hasty judgement.

Smart people often lack common sense. It's quite an odd trait I've noticed.

well, it's not that i lack common sense Ace. it's just that i like to party a lot. I am also all about having fun. so i will say ridiculous things and do embarrassing things because i think it's fun. I am really vain, i like to shop. i dated the prom king, etc. and to top it all off, i am not really friends with the AP students, i much rather prefer to hang out with the kids in regular classes. so there is just that perception that i am going to Ohio state or Miami like all of my friends.

Oh right, fair enough.

I checked this thread again after months and was amazed to find such a great response! Thanks so much for your help...People always have such extreme reactions to Harvard ("It's the BEST!" or "It's the LAST place on Earth you want to be"), so it was nice to hear something more specific and realistic.
I've heard that Harvard is a "lonely place." Is this always true? As a junior, I have started to seriously think about where I want to go to college (I tried starting last year, and ended up confused), and from what I've heard about Harvard, I've gathered that it may be the right place for me.
Thanks again! :)
