I’m expecting sufficient SAT scores and a good GPA, but I’m unclear on exactly what USC wants from applicants.
Academically, do they want subject tests for the film school, or are they unnecessary?
In terms of the application, what exactly should I prepare for? What part of myself should I be focusing on/how should I present myself as? They apparently some kind of video from you as well? What other things that require creativity would I have to send them?
Basically, gaining admission to the USC School of Cinematic Arts for any of their undergraduate major programs is a two step process… with the first step being accepted by USC generally. This link to their recent Freshman profile can give you some idea of the parameters:
But, secondly - you also have to be accepted by SCA themselves. They expect an additional creative portfolio, which are detailed at this link, depending on the major:
While USC’s admission rate was 16.5% last year, the SCA admission rate is more in the range of 4-7% traditionally, depending on the major.
Subject tests scores are not required by any USC school for admission.
SCA expects creativity or the aptitude to demonstrate creative expression. This is mainly demonstrated by your writing samples, but it could also be demonstrated via a video sample or photographic samples. Prior film experience is not specifically a prerequisite, but it could clearly help.
Depending on the major, you could have to submit a series of photographs… to tell a story or establish a theme. But you do not have to necessarily submit a video per se.
You will need to look at the individual portfolio requirements for each potential major to see what you actually need to submit. There are 6 different undergraduate major options: Cinema & Media Studies, Animation and Digital Arts, Interactive Media & Games Division, Film & Television Production, Media Arts + Practice, Writing for Screen & Television Division. What you will need to submit will hinge on your first choice option.
