the hardest/ most prestigious university in the world? There are many to go with it I believe.

My daddy went to IIT (I think that’s what it’s called) in Pune. It’s the equivalent of Harvard in India.

He was in for electrical engineering.
He’s a smart man. :)

“ETH Zurich” in Switzerland is certainly one of the most prestigious universities in the world, not to mention you have to work like crazy if you want to make it here. It’s consistently ranked as one of the top in the world:
[Top Universities for Engineering & Technology 2011-2012](Subject Ranking 2011-12: Engineering & Technology | Times Higher Education (THE))

Some call it the equivalent of US’s MIT and Caltech in Europe.

Is it Oxford in the UK?

Penguinone, everyone knows you love Caltech, and that’s fine, but it’s starting to seem like you’re just trolling. you don’t need to post in every thread you find that you love Caltech. and your posts come off as just a bit bitter.

Probably hatvard or Cambridge…theyre tied on most rankings.

Bryman College,

Really ^, you say that briman college which is now,a,part of the Everest system which has difficulties even finding accredidation is the most competitive college in the world, you need to get some perspective!

It’s unfortunate to see how the Indians have tried really hard to over hype the IITs. I am an Indian myself and right now an undergraduate student at IIT and yeah i did clear the entrance exam. It required an year of constant hard work, but finally i nailed it. Now coming to the point, the graduate and PHD programs at IITs are well below par , reflected in their research outputs. No wonder their rank is outside the top 500 world’s most prestigious universities. second thing, yeah some of the students are intelligent but that is a small fraction…a large part are just average , they got in on the basis of pure hardwork and mastered solving a lot of mathematical problems. But when it comes to original thinking and creativity i haven’t found yet a person of exceptional brilliance at IIT and yeah i am talking about the most prestigious university in INDIA the most overrated i would admit. If you really want to see the students working very hard and interested to master their curriculum i suggest you go to UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO in asia. And when it comes to research ,work culture and original insight none can beat the MITs and CALTECHs and STANFORDs of USA… It’s my dream to go there. Hopefully in future i would be worthy enough to attend any of the above schools mentioned.

Harvard for most prestigious and Caltech for most difficult. But I could definitely understand other choices like MIT, Stanford, all great schools.

I was curious and I looked up how to transfer to Caltech from a CC. You have to take a 4 hour Math exam, and a 3 hour physics exam as part of the application process. They accept <10 transfer students a year…5 last year(out of 214). Jesus Christ. And I thought transferring to a UC was difficult :

Harvard, no debate.

I will just say what you mean by difficulty. I mean most difficult means by hard work or what. As per my self the difficulty depends upon the type of education you are getting i.e your course type etc.

Difficult=IIT
Prestigious=MIT

Well. I would say Peking University, along with Tsinghua University (so called “top2”), of China is the world’s most hardest university to get in.

Less than 7000 students could enter these 2 universities each year. Considering the 1.4 billion population of China, Peking Uni is more harder than IITs (7 campus together) to get in.

In 2013, there are 9.12 million students who attended the college entrance exam in China. so to enter Peking University and Tsinghua University, the ratio is

7000/9120000 = 0.07%

This is very subjective. If you look at the rankings then Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge are all very difficult to get in and their students supposedly study endlessly. However, some say that it the hardest part is to get into Ivy Leagues but once you’re in, its relatively easier to pass your courses and stuff. I don’t know what the truth is but I once met an Indian lady who graduated from Oxford and said it was hardest to get into some Indian college she mentioned which I don’t remember then Oxford. So there you have it.

so in terms of hardest to get in, Peking University and Tsinghua Univ of China CRASH IIT or any other colleges on this planet.

But in terms of most prestigious, I would vote for Harvard, followed by MIT, Yale and Oxbridge.

In terms of HARD TO GET IN:

Peking University > IIT > UTokyo > Seoul National U > Harvard > Oxbridge

I suppose I’m biased but I’d have to say Oxford is the most challenging university. I have friends at Harvard and their workload doesn’t even approach Oxford levels.

A school can’t be the most PRESTIGIOUS university in the world, if other people in the world don’t give a rat’s patootie to go there.
