CollegeGirl, I completely, totally, 100%, emphatically agree with you. Which is why UGA is most likely where I am headed.

And it was for University of Pittsburgh, haha. Not Rutgers.

And it was for University of Pittsburgh, haha. Not Rutgers.

Long story short:

I am a freshman at georgia state. I hate it here and I always planned on transferring.

Should I go to Ohio State for fall 2012(I’ve been accepted or stay at GSU for another semester(commute and have an amazing schedule - both pluses for GSU) and transfer to UGA. I am a pre-dental biology major.

I’m stuck…MCG is my safety dental school…but should I go out of state for OSU? It’s really about the college exp and the GPA/resources at both schools.

Just give me any insight guys.

Well, for themost part, i think UGA would fit its stereotype very well; there is a large presence of sor/frat on campus, and not as racially, culturally, etc diverse as other state flagship school. The hons program is pretty good, it handles things really well with many of its study abroad, research, and scholarship program. If ur in the STEM, well, UGA can’t be compared to GaTech in terms of its student quality, (it also depends on the graduating years) but the hard science in UGA is not bad at all.

When I think of Georgia, I think of U-G-A the coolest college mascot by far.

I went to the New Dawg Orientation today and sent in my commitment deposit immediately after. I LOVE UGA! I can totally see myself being here. The campus (especially old campus) is gorgeous and it reminds me of Harvard’s campus (red brick buildings/pathways). Yes, there isn’t that much diversity but it’s the South! You won’t find as much diversity as in the North. And believe it or not, the Greek life is actually not as big as you think. Only 20% of males are in frats and 25% girls are in sororities. They covered that today.

Also, some stats they mentioned:
Avg. GPA for this year’s EA: 3.97
Avg. GPA for EA and RD: 3.87 (I think…can’t remember because I only paid attention to EA)
Avg. # of AP’s: 6

Applicants: 19,000

% Accepted: 53%

It should be noted that UGA is a public ivy.

CFB53B has some good points. To be honest, if I was actually going to college for my BS then I would not go to UGA. I’m a pre-dental biochemistry major. All hard sciences are the same wherever you go. As long as you go to your flagship university you’re fine.

UGA is making strides. It’s partnership with GHSU is going to draw attention.

Hopefully it’s engineering program takes off and gives a plan B for those students who got rejected from tech but still want to do engineering without losing their soul during undergrad.

It’s pharmacy school is top notch boasting a 98.xx% NAPLEX passrate and it is ranked 26 by US News.

UGA is also making strides in research. If Georgia can strengthen it’s engineering program, build terry back up to beat tech’s business school, get more STEM majors to do research, and get more endowment…I think they will do well.

UGA is not a bad school by any means.

Do you see the issue? A school with a reputation equal to an Ivy League institution wouldn’t consider itself “plan B” for students that can’t get into another school down the road.

I have been a long time lurker on these boards and have resisted the temptation to correct some of the UGA/GA Tech misinformation I have read until now. First let me say that both UGA and Ga Tech are excellent schools and you will get a fine education at both institutions. That said, please do not assume that UGA is a safety school for anyone. You would be amazed at the number of high stat kids who get rejected every year. Also, do not assume that if you get in Ga Tech you are a shoe in at UGA. This year at my daughters small but well regarded private school we had four students who applied early action at both UGA and Ga Tech. These students were not athletes, not URMs, in fact they had no hooks at all. Only one of these students was in the top 20% of the class and two of the students would not even be considered among the best math/science students in the class. All four of these students got in early action to Ga Tech. All four of these students were deferred at UGA and ultimately DENIED! This does not mean that one school is better than the other. I would just caution against believing in blanket statements such as “UGA is a good plan B” if you can’t get into Ga Tech.

The problem with your argument is that Michael Adams admitted this was the case when justifying an engineering program at UGA. Specifically, he said to the Board of Regents that there were many “good” engineering students rejected from Georgia Tech that ultimately go to Auburn, South Carolina, and Alabama. The purpose of UGA engineering is to keep those people in Georgia.

A. This is only true for the engineering majors. Where else in GA can you go as an engineering major? SPSU…one of tech’s transfer schools…Georgia State(to transfer)

B. +1 to that. I know plenty of kids(including myself) 2010 on SAT, 7 AP classes, 3.5+ gpa that got rejected or waitlisted. I also know some of the smartest kids from GA go to UGA(being from the smartest school in the state woot)

UGA is only a plan B for engineering students with a social life. Those that are awkward tech rejects end up going to SPSU or GA state and transferring hopefully.

UGA only has a 8% transfer out rate(I bet 90% of these are to tech)

Tech is a different animal. Tech competes with MIT and cal tech. UGA competes with the other flagships and big name schools such as penn state, (yuck) florida, alabama, mississipi, south carolina, auburn, ohio state, Minnesota, etc.

Give UGA a few years. It’ll get to that level. I got into UCSD, Ohio State, NYU, and Washington but I’m going to GA!
