What's the point of applying to reaches?

My parents are making me apply to several reach schools and I feel like I'm wasting time writing supplemental essays for these schools! Do you anyone who got into their reach school?

Many students do.
It is often stated on College Confidential that certain schools (the Ivy League colleges in particular) are reaches for everyone. So, if you accept that, then everyone who is admitted is an example of someone who got into a reach school.

Of course, you need to pick appropriate reaches.

Because you just might get in? I agree if you aren’t remotely qualified for a school, (ie 3.0 2000 SAT white kid probably should not bother applying to Harvard), then it’s a waste of time, but considering you don’t really lose much by applying to a school, and you really never know what goes through the minds of admissions officers, you never know when your application might stike a chord with an officer and get you into a really great school unexpectedly.

On the other hand, there’s no law saying you have to attend the most selective school that accepts you.

What are your stats and to what reaches are you applying?

If they are really too “out there,” we’ll tell you. I can understand your lack of desire to write essays for schools that you don’t think you stand a chance.

If you don’t have any enthusiasm in applying for a school, then save yourself some time and don’t fill out the app.

I’m personally applying to 30 schools, but all schools on my list I at least have some enthusiasm for and would consider attending. You should really feel the same way to have a successful application.

Colleges -
Boston C
vassar C
Northwestern U
Bates C
Rochester U
Hamilton C
Tufts U
Carleton

NU, BC, and Vassar are reaches on your list. Don’t know much about the rest. Know the outcome will depend a lot on your essays.

I’m applying ONLY to reaches and super reaches RD. I got into
UMich and will likely make several UCs and USC. So I am prepared
for a lot of rejections in April or may be I’ll get lucky!

None of your schools are completely out of reach.

Northwestern and Tufts are high reaches for you. Consider adding U Rochester, Boston University & Tulane.

I’ve already applied to rochester, but I think it’s a reach too

For existentialists: there is no point…

^
Isn’t it something like “I think, so I exist”? Have you been reading Kirkegaard and Jean Paul Sartre?

^ It’s something like: there is a point only if you make it a point…

I’m personally applying to 30 schools

Ohiokid…I may think you’re lovable, but your GC must hate you. ;)

NU and BC are high reaches. BC is getting very hard to get into.

I don’t know about the other schools, except Carleton, which is also getting harder to get into.

Will you be applying as a US resident or as an international? That can make a difference.

What are your safeties?? Or are you not applying to any???

US resident

I’m applying to Syracuse, Bucknell, UCSB, UCD as my (low) matches/safeties
overall I’m trying to apply to 23 schools,

Isn’t that overkill? Are you a CA resident? I wish the UCs would respond earlier with a “likely” so I could apply to fewer colleges.
I cut my list down to UCs, USC, UMich EA, plus 4 super reaches.

I don’t know about the other schools, but I would never refer to Bucknell as a Safety.

They have really been trying to protect yield in recent years. I would classify it as a match.

I think with stats like yours most of the schools become reaches due to the “match” in stats (SAT, GPA, etc) and the percentage of acceptances to schools whose middle 50% stats align.

Your relunctance at this venture is understandable. The admin process is rough, esp when added to a senior’s course load and ECs. Hang in there! If you really want to drop a few schools then have a talk with your parents as to why and as to how you will feel if you have little choices come spring.

probably but even though I applied to UCs, I really don’t like them, I would prefer to go to a smaller school in NE or midwest (I need snow!),
