<p>Don't worry, when I start taking the SAT/ACT, I'll be making one of my own, but what do they accomplish? How do other students know if your ECs suck and if you're going to get in or not? It seems like these threads are there just to make geniuses who know they are getting in feel better about themselves.</p>
<p>What kind of advice is, "Raise your SAT score." Nahh, I think I'm aiming for a few hundred points lower. Obviously your plan is to raise a score.</p>
<p>It’s for people to have people confirm that they are just as good as they think they are. They need the re-affirmation that they are getting into college even though they have “just” a 3.99 and a 2380.</p>
<p>It’s also for normal people, like myself, to see if they have a chance at the school of their dreams! For me that would be Brown! :)</p>

<p>Reassurance. Most of the time from people who aren’t even qualified to offer any.</p>
<p>I think Chance Threads do serve a purpose in such cases.</p>
<p>For example, if a kid posts a message giving his stats, and I see that he is wringing his hands worrying whether or not he is going to get into College X, and I know for a fact that my friend’s son got into that same college last year with much worse stats, such information might give the kid solace. </p>
<p>On the other hand, once in a while I will see a kid post a thread saying that he can’t decide whether he likes Johns Hopkins or Carnegie Mellon better, but then he says he only has a 3.6 gpa and a 1900 SAT, I would want that kid to know that he may be overly optimistic.</p>
<p>When it comes to URMs though, I don’t like it when I see people chancing that kid, because those persons probably have no idea what the actual standards are at a particular school for a minority. </p>
<p>All that being said, I agree that it is rather funny when you see a kid post a message saying he has a 2350 SAT and a 3.9 unweighted average, supposedly worried whether he is going to get into some mid-level college. The kid basically is just bragging in an indirect way, and in reality, simply wants people to tell him how smart he is.</p>
<p>Why not just compare oneself with the thousands of chance threads already out there?</p>
<p>Also, I think after threshold “qualified” status, chance threads are completely useless. The applicant knows they have a decent chance. And no one can give them any more info than that.</p>
<p>I get so annoyed with some of the people who do chance threads. “I have pretty average grades, 4.2W, 34 ACT”…it’s a little obnoxious. I feel that chance threads are for people like me who have no idea if they can get into their dream school, for example someone getting in OSU with a 3.7 and a 23 ACT. I just keep stressing myself out, especially with everyone telling me things I don’t want to hear. Plus I’m a URM so no one really knows what can happen. I have to get out of this habit :/</p>
