What's the story about all these emails my son is getting?

Hi, Liist, are you a junior or a sophomore?

haha whaaat. i got a 235 and i don't get anything from any schools, and i'm a junior and taking 5 APs and i don't get anything from WUSTL...

narcissa, did you check yes?

yes, because i get SOME mail from crappy schools

i wouldn't worry about it. mail is just starting to come out. last year when i was a junior, i think i got stuff from columbia and harvard in the later spring/early summer.

Narcissa: I have been told by a WashU student that they also base their mailings on your ECs, etc., but I'm not sure. They probably recruited me harder than any school, one of their admissions reps even called me, trying to get me to apply (and I'm not a 2300+ person or anything). But I had excellent ECs/rank, and very solid ACTs, so maybe they look more at the whole picture. Not sure though.

will you get mail after your SAT's ? ^^also, i got a 232 and some WUSTL mail. i was really surprised cuz i come from a small rural school and not many EC's

vc08 - how did the schools know what kind of ECs you participated in? And firefly scout - so, basically, the Rice email I got meant nothing?

D-Yu: Yes, I got more mail after the SATs, though it's hard to differentiate between what was sent based on the SAT or PSAT. About the 2320: that will get you mail from WUSTL, no matter what ECs you have lol. congrats on a great score!

unc: I believe I released that info to the collegeboard either through a test or through my CB account.

^^no 2320 yet (i wish). 232 on PSAT. takin' the real thing in march. thanks a lot tho'

lol yah i would kill to get my PSAT score on my SATs :]

haha, well 232=2320 on the SAT. Good luck with that, you can do it!

unckid - I wouldn't say the Rice email is worthless - it is just trying to direct your interest to Rice.

ok, thanks vc and firefly...about the Rice email, I did what I could and I'm fine with whatever happens - I emailed them back, so at least they know I'm interested now

I got a letter from WUSTL. They congratulated me on my high PSAT score and excellent performance in "High Schoo." Heh.

even I got letters with a 187 PSAT score. I got a handful (about 10-15 schools?) of e-mails. I know they mean next to nothing, but they are pretty flattering

My DD (sophomore) took her PLAN and PSAT's in October. About 6 weeks after that, the flood of mail began :) which was exciting for about a week. It has tapered off dramatically, until yesterday when she got 13 pieces of mail from a higher caliber of school (Washington & Lee, Brown, Columbia, etc.) and the tenor of this mail was much different than the first wave of mailings. They were all touting her "achievements...very select group...gifted, etc." I told her that they probably coincided with her scores being released. Am I thinking correctly?

Her PSAT score was a 196 (her reading was 70 & Writing Skills 69 both 99%)
Her PLAN composite was 29 out of 32 (her English was 32; her reading was 30)

Thanks!
RobD

RobD, our mail picked up again yesterday, too, with eight colleges. I'd love to know what drives who gets what. For instance, since the fall, only one piece of mail has come from in-state. The vast majority of it is from far-flung places so I think it's a geographic thing. That and that the fact that he's a URM so maybe places like Grinell, NYU and Emory don't get as many URM apps?

Hey gratz on the emails. I don’t get emails from colleges… interestling i got a 203 on the PSAT. and im sure i checked that box… i get emails from Princeton review telling me im a great match for certain schools though…
