Whats Umass Amherst like?

I’m unfamiliar with East Coast geography (SF, Bay Area) how’s the biking scene? (Incl. Mountain biking)

Plenty of good biking and trails near Amherst. If you like BMX racing, Whip City BMX is nearbye and has some great racing on Friday nights.

Hm, I’m more of a crosscountry rider, but sounds good, no mountains in the area?

No mountains by West Coast standards, but plenty of large hills. We call them “mountains” but they rarely go over 1500 ft high.

I just enrolled in umass and I’m very excited however I got in as undecided and I thought of going to the school of engineering but I found out that you need a 3.7 gpa on your freshman year to get in. ( Theres no way I can get a 3.7 gpa…)So I decided to be a premed major. In addition, I really want to room with my friend, who I’ve known since 5th grade but he got into the school of engineering and therefore most likely will be dorming in the northeast area. Would this make sense if I also dorm with him in the northeast area even though I probably won’t be majoring in engineering? My second question is if I do major in premed does that also mean I have to walk across the campus to get to the southwest area where all the premeds are when I take my classes? thanks!

A 3.7 GPA is not impossible. It is rather difficult if you take courses that have tough curves (weed-out courses like Bio 100 tend to have these curves).

Rooming with your friend in NE is not a problem. I knew plenty of “pre-med” students in NE. Also, unless things have changed massively in the past few years, many of your science courses will be close to NE.

Thankyou so much

From what I’ve seen, many pre-med classes are near the northeast, but all the RAPs for pre-med are in SW (a bit of a problem for us to walk it, but it shouldn’t be that bad).

I’m going to be a freshmen at UMass next year and am not into the partying scene at all. I’m thinking of living in Brooks which is alcohol free. I know some schools will say their dorms are alcohol free or wellness dorms, but they aren’t very strict about maintaining that standard. My question is, is Brooks actually alcohol free or is there just as much drinking there as in other dorms?

I also have the same question as oli123. I’m not a party-harder either haha
Also, cycletheroad keeps saying that the pre-med RAPs are in SW. I’m looking at the list of RAPs in Southwest and I don’t know which ones are pre-med… How do you tell which RAP is considered “pre-med” or not?

And has anyone had experience in the Health Science Honors RAP? How are the classes/seminars? Are they challenging (I guess I’m not sure how I should define challenging but is it like a typical AP sciences class in high school?)?

Hey i just want to warn any of you who are considering biotap…it’s not that great, and i wish i never joined it. while the classes are smaller, the professors are frustrating and i don’t think i learned very much. also, besides the new science buildings, the campus is really ugly and falling apart…so much construction going on

I see a contradiction: campus is falling apart vs. so much construction going on.

Which is it???
