What's up with ED up 10% and Regular up 6%

Weren’t the numbers down last year? When that happens, those looking at the acceptance chances jump on where it looks like there might be a bit of a break.

I would hope that this represents the start of a trend. Phil Hanlon is the best president Dartmouth’s had in years and I really believe he can do much to improve the yield of people who are truly enthusiastic about the school. We may see a return of Dartmouth to the Top 10 on US News in the coming years.

Dartmouth numbers have actually gone down the last few years. It by far receives the fewest applications in the Ivy League. To stop this downward trend, Dartmouth (and Penn) extended their applications deadlines.

This was sent out to GCs:

As of today, Dartmouth has received just over 20,500 applications—a 6.2% increase over last year. We anticipate that the rate of admission for the Class of 2019 will be approximately 10%.

ricck1, FYI Columbia and a number of highly selective non-Ivies such as Chicago also extended their deadlines, and Yale (and rumor has it Princeton) extended its deadline for certain students.[Source: Bloomberg News] So that’s at least three, maybe more, of the eight Ivies that extended their deadlines.

As for a “downward trend” in applications, RD apps dropped last year while ED apps increased. The year prior, there was a small decrease in total apps. Other than that, every year has seen an increase in both ED and RD apps.

Regarding the number of apps generally, Dartmouth has the smallest student body in the Ivies, so it’s not surprising that it has the fewest apps.

For the class of 2016 (3 years ago) Dartmouth received 23,110 applications and accepted 2,260 of those students.
