speak away

first generation

what if you're the first college student in your family on both sides...should you put that somewhere? lol. I mean, I realize apps typically ask if your parents went to college, but I would think my situation is somewhat rare.

What is my parents didn't even graduate high school? Is there any consideration for that?

No high school completion is basically the same in the admissions process as a 1st Generation College student at most schools. Though, it might not be at some particular schools.

does everyone agree its first generatu?

what if you're first generation, low income, and come from a single-parent home?

Depends on the school. For example, take the UCs--if you read their factsheets, you'll see some campuses give you points for all three of the things you mention--others give you no points for any of them.

I think it depends on the situation. If you're first generation with a father that is a professional plumber that makes comfortable living, and somebody else has a father with college education that died years ago and left the family in poverty....

try reading up on the educational opportunities program(EOP) UC's offer...

Oh come on, why don't you just earn it by getting good grades rather than using your "misfortunes" in life to help you get in.

b/c everyone else applying to top schools has good grades as well...

Yeah, and the people who work hard throughout high school and have the best grades SHOULD get into the top schools. Not those who have average grades and say it is because they are from a low income family or a first generation college student.

i agree...but usually there are far more applicants that have the best grades than there are spots...so being a first-year college student can set you apart from the pack. It may suck, but it's how it works. Good thing the top colleges are expanding their universities. That's the best solution.

Yeah, I guess. Atleast UC can't admit people just cause of their race anymore.
