The love of my life is a clinical psychologist turned librarian working in a highly underserved and impoverished neighborhood. It was a perfect transition (as odd as it sounds) as the desire to make a difference in other peoples lives was the actual calling.
@JustaMom im in tears, i love How u said “the love of ur Life” that’s so cute. but may i Ask how long she/he (sorry i don’t know What pronouns they use.) have to be in school For?
7 years for the PsyD - 2 for the masters and 5 slogging through the doctoral program. Another 3.5 years to get the second masters in Library Science (all garnered while working a real job). For the record, it’s a “he/him” I’m actively working on shifting my pronoun usage to be more inclusive/neutral - I do pretty well most of the time.
when I was younger I always thought my ideal job would be selling ice cream on the beach. I love being out in the sun, pretty scenery, the air has a salty scent, sound of the surf rolling in is relaxing, everyone’s happy.
my dream job was to work for National Geographic Magazine!
i didnt quite know in what capacity; but I did study geography, news writing and advertising though with the background hopes of getting there. I am in the communications field now and really like it as a generalist; working in both conservation and higher education areas. But not at National Geographic.
oh well thank U!
I have enjoyed being an architect because it’s a lot like putting together jigsaw puzzles and you are helping people, but the job I actually enjoyed most (didn’t hurt that it was only 20 hours a week) was being the librarian for a professor’s Africana library at Caltech. I shelved and catalogued the books, read and filed newspaper clippings and helped kids find the resources for paper topics. I’d lived in Africa for some of my growing up years, and it was fun to learn more about the rest of the continent. There was a fair amount of variety in my day, and when I didn’t have things I had to do, I was surrounded by books to read.
None, and even in retirement is not my ideal job either.
I love my job, but I created it. I envisioned something like this in grad school but it didn’t exist. I had some useful ideas when I was a grad student and then a professor, took a job working on Wall Street working as an investment banker and then in private equity to get some experience, and then decided never to work for anyone else again. I started consulting half-time and helping with entrepreneurial ventures half time. So, I now have a small consulting firm that uses my ideas to help companies and governments and then have helped start (but never run) a wastewater treatment company, a quantitative hedge fund, and a tech startup. Plus i do pro bono projects trying to use my skill set for the public benefit. I try to do things that interest me and that the world wants.
Writer. I still hope that one day I’ll write my own novel.
@williams1 i believe in u
