MIT Admissions Officer: Apply Sideways: http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/applying_sideways

I always post this whenever someone asks for opinions on their ECs. There is no set of ECs that will get you into the college you want to attend; as long as you follow your passions and commit to them, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

@azwu331 i get that but im just trying to get peoples opinions on what are the main ideas they get from the extrcurriculars i do

@Davidhtx Well, if you want an opinion: besides your focus in music, it looks like a laundry list. If we remove your middle school accomplishments(which doesn’t count in college apps, btw), we’d have a decent chunk of it out. None of them are particularly outstanding either. And @azwu331 has provided you with valuable information. I’ve seen your previous thread before. For now, you only want an opinion to see if it’s “good” for college. Keep your chin up. A college out there will love you for what you do, even if it’s not good enough for Stanford and colleges of the like.

This is so long. Honestly imo if you submitted this, it would just piss off whoever is reading it. I’d cut atleast half of it and just keep the most meaningful ones. There is no one AMAZING ec on this list, which is fine, for 99% of colleges and in some cases 100%. You’ve made your passion for music very clear, so that’s probably in your favor.

^^ “Laundry list” is a perfect descriptor.

Wow, your EC list is impressive! I agree with what everyone else has said- I would only put the activities that you enjoy doing the most. According to your list, (I would) focus on your music and swim activities and achievements because you seem to have accomplished a lot in both of these activities. From there, include what you find to be the most important. Colleges like to see dedication when it comes to EC’s, so I personally would only include the ones that make you look the strongest (which are the ones you put a lot of time into and won a lot of awards from). You only get so many spaces for your extracurriculars on college applications, so remove the ones that you don’t have a lot of experience at and/or you don’t love.

thanks everyone

im actually in the process of organizing a donation event for the houston food bank .

ive been looking for opinion like these . my close friends are way to biased

@basedchem this is a first draft of my extracurriculars . i wanted to get opinions on what i should cut , what people see, etc. i by no means intended this to be the list i put on com app

i have a year and a half left and i will be planning some donation events , and other events for charities i love .

^ Your ECs are way too diffuse:

  • Music. Obviously important to you.
  • Volunteering. 500 hours is impressive, and it seems to be a genuine passion.

But then …

  • Swimming
  • Soccer
  • Speech and debate
  • Robotics / computer science team / tech honor society
  • History team / internship
  • Film/video

Not to mention throwing in yoyo as an EC.

This is the “laundry list” aspect. There’s no way anyone can do all of these to a high level, and the overall effect is to dissipate the impressiveness of other areas. You need to pick a couple areas of focus and make sure these are organized coherently whenever you do apply. Group related activities together so that they have more weight. Drop or leave off things that are of secondary importance.

Thanks , but it’s not that I added throwing yoyo . I added that I helped organize a state competition

But I appreciate your advice

And will take it

Good ECs, but I agree, only mention the most important ones.

New list with concentration on the main things ive done the most with.

Band:
-Solo Ensemble :
-3 x years solo ranking 1
-2 x years ensemble ranking 1
-1 x year state ranking 2
-3 x years wind ensemble grading all 1s
-2 x years symphonic band grading all 1s
-1 x year marching band grading all 1s (one of the five school to only get this rating)
positions:
-2 x year region band & honor band - tenor saxophone
Leadership:
-Wind ensemble lead tenor
-jazz band leader tenor
-lead cymbal / cymbal technician assistance indoor drumline
-leader of the saxophone section
Volunteering :
-190 hours - Teach people instruments - Mentor Sax players -competition - Band community events
Swimming: 4x years
-Leader of the elite group of swimmers
-Coordinator assistance
-Volunteering : 250 hours
-Teach people to swim
-mentor for swimmer with their swimming technique

Extra Volunteering:
-Judge for speech and debate competitions 20 hours

That’s much better. More focus and themes emerging in your ECs.

thank you
