What's your student doing this summer?

S (college junior) won’t be back from semester abroad until late June so lined up counseling position at old standby overnight camp in Adirondacks prior to his departure. Doesn’t pay much, but free room and board and will keep him fresh for return to RA stint @ his college in the fall. He had a prestigious paid internship last summer so hopefully won’t be too much of a drag on his resume.

D (hs junior) is following in brother’s footsteps at overnight camp, ascending to the assistant counselor rung this summer.

S1 has a nice internship in Silicon Valley.

S2 - no idea. I’d like him to earn some money, but depending on where he ends up he may have a very short or a fairly long summer. He’s lobbying to spend a week in Vermont, and we’re lobbying to spend a week visiting S1 and have a family reunion with DH’s side of the family as well, which may pretty much do in any chances of his working for anyone but me.

LOL!

This is my fear, but I know my DS wants to earn the money, so he’ll find something. DD, a HS junior, already has a part-time job so she’s all set.

Mine plans to take summer classes, then come home and volunteer for a local political campaign, then return early for his campus job.

The summer classes are intense and right on the heels of a rough semester, so I imagine he’ll spend a week or two mostly sleeping and staring off into space after he first gets home. I’m looking forward to it, honestly, as I suspect this will be his last summer home. I’ll be carving out some time to play late-night large-screen video games with him. :)

As little as he can get away with. He’s had academic camps the last five years running. He’s earned a rest IMHO.

My son is graduating and hoping to find a job. A new experience for him sending out tons of resumes and not hearing back from the majority of them. Different from his prior local job experiences where you walk through the door and hand them your resume - he has never not got a job he has interviewed for, just needs to get that interview! If he does not have a job by mid May he is thinking of coming with me to England to visit his England Granny and Uncle who he has not seen in 5 and 6 years respectively. (ticket would be on his dime as I can barely swing my own ticket this year).

Daughter is doing a couple of classes, continuing with some research at school, hoping to find a part time summer job, and going on a cruise to Alaska with her Fiance and his Mom (paid for by his Mom - I’m jealous).

Daughter

S will be working a 12 weeks internship in the Chicago area starting mid-May.

Daughter doing a paid research internship in Oregon. The group plans weekend rafting, hiking, camping etc. trips each weekend which she will love. What I won’t love is not seeing her. :frowning: Thank goodness for Skype.

Son (college Freshman) working at Philmont Scout Ranch as a back country counselor. No technology for 3 months, not even cell phone range

Daughter (HS senior rising freshman) working at a Bio lab. Paid internship.

Should I start another thread asking for suggestions of chores to be done at home, or will this question here suffice?

Kids will be working full-time, but it’s only a 7-week stint, and the summer is 14 weeks long.

D2 has a paid research position with her PI in a biomedical field. She’ll also be taking 1 summer session class (Biochem–required for our state Med School and it won’t fit into her schedule unless she takes it in the summer.) In August, she and a friend are hiking the entire length of the John Muir Trail. All 230 miles of it.

D1 will be taking 2 summer classes, working full time as a waitress, working part time as research assistant in the nuclear engineering dept, and applying to medical schools.

D1 has a paid marketing/pr internship with a minor league ball club in town. Is also trying to get another paid/unpaid 10-15 hour a week position since she will have some down time when the team is out of town.

S1 will graduate - is looking for something, but has the back-up of caddying and maybe working in the clubhouse of country club.

D2 is 12 - I told her she needs to get a babysitting/mother’s helper flyer out and knock on the doors of all these young moms around the neighborhood. :)

I’m volunteering most likely- have applied for jobs but know that the chances of getting them are slim, and have looked into taking classes but realized that none of them would really get me out of requirements. I’ll also be studying French in the hopes of doing well on the placement exam and not having to take foreign language in college.

Shacking up w/ the gf in Palo Alto while she takes a class @ Stanford and he works an internship.

Sophmore (high school) son will be spending 6 weeks at NC Governor’s School. He’s so excited, and I am wondering what will I do without my baby for 6 weeks.

@ 3bysmom – roflmao!

My son will be back working at the Hollywood Bowl in the evening and I hope finding a cc to take morning elementary Italian.

D 1 will be driving the beverage cart out to the golfers at a local country club but is also interviewing this week for an unpaid internship at a Boston radio station.
D 2 will be working as a camp counselor at a girls sleep away camp in the Lakes region of NH - a job she did last summer and loved.

Since she has a part-time on campus job during the academic year, I think my D has earned a bit of a break this summer, but she will still be pretty busy. She’s taking 3 classes at our local uni, volunteering at a nearby animal shelter and has actually OFFERED to help me in the garden and with some household maintenance and repair projects I’ve got planned. She’s also hoping to make some progress on a creative writing portfolio she’s putting together.

D (graduating from college; headed to grad school in Sept.) – finding apartment at said grad school and hopefully working to earn $$$. She’s a certified personal trainer and will also be looking for work (paid or unpaid) at the grad school center specializing in her area of interest. H thinks she’s earned a rest; I think she’s facing the real world and should get on with it.

S (finishing freshman year in college) – working for 2nd year at family camp in lakes region of NH, either on Service Crew or in the Kitchen. Not a ton of money, but a character-building combo of fun and hard work.

Oldest son (just finishing his freshman year of college) has an internship with a Congressman. Also plans to take three classes to finish out his core requirements, work a part-time job at a burger place and visit his girlfriend in another state.

Youngest son (a rising high school freshman) is all excited that he will have summer homework from at least two classes. Yeah, I know. It’s strange.
