My son is graduating in May from an excellent school with a degree in music and a bunch of internships in the music business as well as a not-for-profit under his belt. Hardly any employers are responding to resumes, but maybe it's too early for jobs starting June 1 or after? He figures that he'll apply to some paid internships soon as well. Is there a sensible point to switch the focus more to internships or part-time positions?

I would apply for both paid internships and full-time jobs. I think it’s too early for part-time - unless the company has has a record of promoting part-timers to full-time AND the job is in his field. My two cents. Internships can turn into jobs.

Applying to paid internships couldn’t hurt, but he certainly should not altogether “switch focus” on paid internships, as the odds will be even greater against him for those internships (even though they are lower paid). The vast majority of companies STRICTLY reserve internships to those who are still pursuing their degree at the time of the internship, regardless of qualifications.
