When an Ivy League Coach offers to support your application

NatDee123 - That is a great question. Given some Ivys have 30-35 sports teams in various NCAA and non-NCAA affiliations: I’d like to know the answer too. The Ivys churn out an incredible number of quality student athletes but I’m not sure if all sports qualify for LL or if that is left up to each Athletic Director.

Purely conjecture on my part, but I believe the number of LL is based on the number of sports, number of athletes and the AD is given a number that he can decide how he wants to allocate LL to specific sports. I know my son’s sport (baseball) and his girlfriends sport (soccer) had specific numbers every year that did not change over 4 years. We talked about it last Thanksgiving Again, just my guess as I thought I read something about that years ago in an Ivy League bylaws.

@Natdee123, I don’t know if this directly answers your question, but Ivy League schools are allotted 230 LLs each year. (based on a rolling 4 year average) They don’t all take the full allotment - under President Levin, for example, Yale cut the number of LLs to 177. The number is spread across about 35 sports, as fenwaysouth mentioned. Football will get their 30 slots each year. The remainder will be doled out as the AD and program needs dictate.

To your question - are there any small, non-revenue sports that get 0? It’s possible, I guess - but I do know of LLs given to athletes in fencing, diving, softball, etc.

^should probably add, that 230 number was Yale specific based on the number of teams. Dartmouth may have slightly fewer but they’re all going to be around 200 or so.

Slot may or may not = likely letter.

University policy determines number of total slots, subject to Ivy maximum. For example, Brown has 38 varsity sports and is targeting a reduction in slots from 225 to 205 by the fall of 2015, based on a policy decision.

Athletic department allocates slots among sports.

Admissions office, not athletic department, issues any likely letters

Update from author of original post:

I DID end up receiving a likely letter. Though the coach did not mention it specifically when he offered to support me, I ended up receiving one about two weeks after I submitted my application. Thanks so much for the advice throughout this process, everyone!

Congratulations! So awesome to hear that!

Congratulations @Natdee123!! My daughter got her Columbia LL today as well! Go Lions!

@gobrown85 I just got my Columbia likely letter yesterday!! What sport does she do?
