When can I live in the Village?

soooooooooooo...

Village at Vanderbilt outside of Peabody?

yeah, or any other singles really that allow pets. Am I allowed after freshman year? Is it only for upperclassmen?

Technically, you are required to live on campus all 4 yrs. For senior year, you may be able to submit an application and live off campus. Other than that, I’d recommend getting a fish.

I was under the impression that the Village was considered on-campus.

Village at Vanderbilt is an off-campus apartment complex…it just happens to have “Vanderbilt” in the name. You are eligible to apply to live off campus your senior year, but even then you aren’t guaranteed to be granted off-campus permission.

On campus “apartment style” dorms are Towers suites, Morgan, Lewis, the Chaffins, and the Mayfields. They technically don’t allow pets, but some people sneak them (hard to do though, considering housekeeping comes in to clean the bathrooms once a week). Sorry to bust your bubble a little more, but it’s also very difficult for a sophomore to get in one of these…basically, they would have to be with a group of seniors to have enough housing lottery points. There are lots of sophomores who live in traditional dorm-style singles though.

With the growing size of the transfer class, gaining an off campus spot senior is becoming much easier. Other than that, LittleLostFlute is right on. I wouldn’t try to sneak pets in to the dorms though. If found out, you’ll have 24 hours to remove it or it will be removed (clearly depending on who your RA is etc.)

They’re actually letting fewer and fewer students live off campus. I think in the near future it won’t even be possible unless you have an extenuating circumstance.

If you have parents who live in Davidson County (which is where Vanderbilt and Nashville are located) you can live off campus. I do know of a sophomore transfer who is going to live in an apartment off campus because her parents live in the same county.

dtotheustin09,

That was the trend for some time. However transfer rates are increasing and driving about 500 seniors off campus by neccessity. Many of these offers to live off campus are after the housing lottery, and are being given during the summer.

In previous years around 175 students have transferred into Vandy per year. This year the transfer class was 275, and all predictions show that this will increase. This means 100 seniors were offered off campus housing.

ditto^

they even allowed some juniors to live off campus for the upcoming year since the transfer class was so big

As a parent of an incoming freshman who is guaranteed housing the first year, with what you are saying about upperclass transfers, does this mean that non transfer students may not be guaranteed housing as upperclassmen?

No, Vanderbilt still gaurantees housing all 4 years. Currently, no student will be forced to live off campus, and I don’t forsee that changing in any immediate timetable.

It may be true that they are still letting seniors live off campus. That doesn’t guarantee anything though. I knew several people who tried last year and did not get it granted.

My daughter, a 2009 grad, did petition to live off campus her senior year and was given permission. She lived with a roommate in a 2-bedroom apartment at Village at Vanderbilt, which is not campus housing. I’ve been told that the university owns it, but it’s run like any other private apartment complex. Other residents include grad students, hospital staff, and folks with no Vanderbilt ties whatsoever. I think that some units are reserved for patients or families of patients in Vandy’s transplant or other long-term health care programs.

It’s a very nice option - it might as well be part of campus because it’s so close. Parking is included in the monthly rent. I consider it expensive - her monthly rent was about $850, I think. However, it’s safe, convenient, and on the luxurious side (certainly by dorm standards!).
