When do audition dates and times go online?

You can't sign up until either 10/1 or 11/1 but the dates when auditions will be available are listed now for ED and RD:

http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/ugdramaaud.html

soozievt, am I missing something? None of the dates listed are for New York. They're all in Chicago, Atlanta and so on. The type above the chart does say "Regular Decision artistic reviews are held for four weeks in New York City, beginning with the last week of January," but no dates are listed.

Not soozie - BUT the site says what you say - then the schedule is for the TOUR artistic reviews only - so it only lists the non-NYC ones.

First, thanks Gem for letting others know of this update to the site. The new information is the dates for the off campus auditions in other cities. As far as audition dates at NYU, it only specifies which weeks they will be held, and so like NMR says, the dates are not yet posted but I never have seen them posted until the day it goes online (Oct. 1 for ED or Nov. 1 for RD). So, you just have to know that they audition most days, or most weekdays, during those four weeks in NYC and think through your first and second choice dates and call as soon as they take appointments (10 AM). As well, I recall it can be done online starting then and all the dates will appear online......in fact, as you are on hold on the phone, which you inevitably will be, LOL....be looking at all the dates on the site which will be up that morning!

NMR...I don't think you are missing anything. I don't think the actual dates in the winter in NYC will go up....I think it is most days for four weeks straight...they audition about 2500-3000 people in all for Tisch....so a lot of days are involved!

If you pick one of the very latest dates, perhaps you can dovetail with seeing the Mainstage Musical which opens on Feb. 21. I don't know the final day of auditions, however. Just am guessing it could run close if you audition near the end.

EDIT...I cross posted with MusThCC...

Thanks! I had a fear that the dates for NYC were there on the site and I just, for whatever reason (severe myopia, stupidity, middle age-ness, being blonde :)) I didn't see it. I actually scrolled through the pages twice to make sure! Gracias/merci/xie xie to all of those here who have offered info. My D and I will sit down with the calendar (again!) and know before Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. when she is available. Good luck, everybody.

Hello All,

For the 2007 season there were NO Saturdays in New York CIty offered. And the Friday slots went first. I was online at 10am and they were flying out but I did check later in the afternoon for my own curiousity. Some dates were full by the afternoon but there were dates available. Her good friend went on later in the afternoon and got a date in February without a problem. Also the dates around the NYC Unifieds went early as well.

My D had asked me to book an early date for her and she auditioned on Janaury 31 (the first day in 07 was January 30).

Just my experience.......
MikksMom

Do you have to have application materials/application fee etc. in before you can sign up for that audition time?? Is the audition for both CAP 21 and Tisch or are they separate. For those much more experienced than I....what is the criteria that they use to distinquish between these 2500 kids...how important is the dance component??? Can you suggest some safety schools in the NY area that might be good safety schools if NYU doesnt work out?? Has anyone heard anything about the program at Wagner on Staten Island???Thanks!!!!

I'm willing to answer some basic questions but if you are truly wanting to do this, you really really really need to research some of these things much more. Many of the questions you are asking are the sorts that can be easily looked up. What CC is good for in particular, are the questions that are either harder to find in writing/online or for opinions/sharing.

No, at NYU, you do not have to have an application filed to line up an audition. The RD apps are due Jan. 1. You may start lining up your audition starting on Nov. 1. Auditions in NYC take place during late Jan. and most of Feb.

There is ONE audition for all of Tisch. If you wish to be considered for CAP1, then you must sing, in addition to the monologues. You can stipulate your first and second choice studio and give reasons for your choices. Sometimes, if they like your talent but do not have room in CAP21 or feel that CAP21 is not the best choice studio for you, they may consider you for one of the acting studios. If you don't wish to be considered for any acting studios, you can stipulate that you only want to be considered for CAP21. That does not increase your odds of getting into CAP21 but merely means that if you don't get into CAP21, you would then be rejected in sum. There are no dance auditions to get in. There are dance placement auditions on the first day of CAP21 studio each year of the program and many levels of each dance discipline offered per year/grade. To get into Tisch, 50% of the decision is based on artistic review and 50% on "academic" review by the admissions office. NYU is a selective school academically.

No BFA schools are safety schools. No audition based schools are safety schools.

In NYC, there are BFA and BA programs by audition at Marymount Manhattan and BFA programs at Pace and a BA by audition program at Wagner. None are safeties. Pace is easier to get into than NYU/Tisch both academically and artistically (talent pool overall). If you want to major in MT, I would not pick schools simply because they are in NYC!!

BAs near NYC....Muhlenberg, Manhattanville.
BFA near NYU....Montclair State

You can read about Wagner as we have a subforum right here on the MT Forum for that school.

I just wanted to jump in and offer help to anyone. We live in Colorado, my son auditioned in NY in February 2007. He was accepted to TISCH and then to his amazement CAP21. Soozievt and NotMamaRose have been around a lot longer than I have; however, I would be glad to answer any questions regarding my son's experience.
I do know that he's already seen 3 plays and was at the MET last night. He is in heaven. Only wants to come home for Christmas so he can return to NY to watch the "big ball" drop. He's already talking about getting a job next summer and staying there. He absolutely loves NY. He is in University Hall.
Any way I can be of assistance please drop me a line.
God Bless you all.

Durangotreasure, glad to hear your son loves it so far. Mine is never home either and also wanted to spend her summer this past summer working in theater in NYC. I hope he continues to thrive and be happy at school. Perhaps our kids will meet at some point. Your son is living in a great location. I just drove by his dorm yesterday. :)

but you're full up

I prefer emails.

OK, folks, the online scheduler (and audition telephone hotline) went into effect this morning at 10 am EST, just as planned. I was fortunate enough to get the audition date my D wanted. I noticed, however, that each time period had a number in parentheses near it, designating (I presume) the number of slots available. So, if a kid has an audition for (for example) 2 p.m. on such and such a date, how long do you think that kid should plan to be there? I ask because our plan is to travel to NYC that a.m. on the train, have her do her thing, and then travel home again that evening. Discounted tickets are possible if they are booked ahead ....

My D. also scheduled her date yesterday. I was just reading the confirmation email and it stated that students will be seen in the order that they registered. D. said there was no opportunity to select an advanced dance audition. I had read on this site that Tish has 2 separate dance auditions. Did we miss something or has that changed?

Chelle,

Tisch has done away with the optional/advanced dance auditions. I think my D's year (she is currently a junior at CAP) was the last year they held these. Just so you know, should your child attend CAP21, on the first day of each year, they have dance placement auditions and within any given grade/year/class, there are FOUR levels for EACH discipline of jazz, ballet, and tap.

NMR....I think there may be a morning and afternoon group and within that group, once they hold the introductory session, they audition kids in the order they had registered, as chelle mentions. So, since you were an early bird yesterday, I imagine your D might be near the beginning. Once the info. session is over, and if she is near the beginning, she can leave once her turn is over and you may not be there that long. It was slightly different when my D auditioned as she auditioned on the optional Sat. dance audition day and so dance was in the morning, then the info. session, and then each had a turn to audition, but my D was the second to go in her audition room (they had two simulataneous audition rooms going on at one time) and so for that part of the day (not counting dance, which is no longer), she was not there that long at all. I will make a guess that your D will be done before 4. If you called right at 10 yesterday, like we had done, I venture to say your D will be near the top of the list for her audition room.

I agree with Soozie. There was no dance audition last year. My D would have loved to have one, since dance is a strength for her. But it was no longer available. As to time, we scheduled her audition the first morning they were available, for a Friday afternoon audition on the last NYC audition day. The information session was first, there were three auditors presenting, and then the kids were divided between those three auditors to audition. My D was first in her room to go, and we were out of there very quickly. We were done in less than an hour including both the information session and her actual audition and interview (in the audition room). She was accepted with Saturday in the Square invitation, so I don't think it mattered that there was no dance audition. She is not attending however, choosing Elon instead (best choice she could have ever made---for HER!!).

Thanks, soozie and nydancemom! Yes, I admit to being online a few moments after the audition scheduler went live and scheduling my kid's audition. I was remembering the story that blaneyboy told about waiting a little longer and then having his kid audition for NYC in LA. (Of course, at the time, I didn't know that he was closer to the West Coast than, like us, the East Coast, so that sounded extreme and something to be avoided!:)) In any case, my guess is my kid will be the first to go at her 2 p.m. session, so it is probably safe to buy train tickets to take us back home at around dinnertime. My D is so so excited about auditioning for Tisch. She noted last night that the confirmation email they sent instructed girls to wear either low heels or bare feet. Is a simple dress or skirt still OK; in other words, can they just kick their shoes off? (Sounds good to me ... the older I get, the more I loathe heels. How I ran around during my 20s and 30s in spike heels, I will never know ... the resilience of youth!) Good luck in auditions, everyone. I cannot believe the moment of truth is coming so soon. (By the way, guys, how soon do kids find out if they have been accepted to Tisch? And remind me when the Saturday in the Square invite comes for the chosen ...)

Tisch seems to prefer low heels or bare feet in the auditions. That was kinda different for my kid as she was wearing what she normally would wear to an audition and that included heels. So, once they said that in the little session before individual auditions, she kicked off her shoes and went in barefoot. I sorta died at the time but that's what they asked for and so you do it! NMR, a skirt, dress, or nice pants all work. My D wore a skirt to some auditions and dressy pants to other auditions. For NYU, I recall she was in nice pants with heels, but no shoes in the audition room in the end! You definitely can make a train by dinner time to go home. NYU sends out admissions decisions on April 1. The Saturday in the Square invitations come out around ten days prior to that. However, you can be admitted to NYU/Tisch and not get the Saturday in the Square invitation.

On my D's audition day, there were only two audition rooms, not three, like NyDanceMom's D had. But I think this was due to my D auditioning on the Dance audition Saturday (which is no longer offered) and that audition day was limitted to 18 total applicants and so after the morning dance auditions and the subsequent information session, they were divided into two lists of nine and each list auditioned in separate rooms. I imagine there are more than 18 auditioning on other audition dates that are not the dance ones, which were limited in number (all were also trying obviously for CAP, which is not true on another audition date necessarily).

sooz, I noticed when I was registering my kid (I promise you she would have done it herself, but she was in class at high school during the time the scheduler went online and live!), I noticed there was a number in parentheses next to each time offered. The one next to the time I selected for my D said (16), so I am guessing that means that they would allow 16 kids in that 2 p.m. timeslot.

Hi all, if anyone here is dying to get an audition date for NYU Tisch in NY in early Feb but got closed out, I happen to know that an appointment slot just opened up! My D ultimately decided not to apply/audition there, and we just canceled her audition appointment.
