When Do I Have to Declare a First-Choice College?

If you receive the $2500 NMSC scholarship, you will not be offered any other “official” NMF scholarships. Some schools make up the difference, others don’t.

billcsho: Please note that, for the schools that offer large National Merit Finalist packages l(ike full or half tuition waivers or more), usually only a small portion of that is administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Sometimes colleges will specifically list how much of the total is the “official” NMSC-administered portion on their website but not always. The rest of the offer is administered by the college itself completely independent of NMSC, and is available to all NMF (or if competitive, to whomever the school chooses) regardless whether the NMF already received another type of NMSC-administered award.

Likewise, being awarded one of the NMSC official awards has no bearing on any other private scholarship award that is not from NMSC.
