When do I start applying for scholarships?

I am in my junior year of high school and I want to know around what time do I start applying for scholarships?

There are a few scholarships that Jrs can apply to but most scholarships you start applying fall of Sr year. Do research to find them over the summer. Also read the financial aid forum here and the threads pinned at the top of the forums. Most aid comes from colleges based on need or merit.

Thanks

What is your situation?

How much do you need for merit scholarships?

How much will your parents pay for college?

the best awards come from the colleges

Well my mom has already said that she wants to avoid me taking out loans for college as much as possible. Also, on top of that we have a low income.

What kind of grades and test scores do you have?

One typically gets the best money from the individual college rather than local scholarhsips. Local Scholarships are typically for one year only. Apply to schools where you are in the top 25% of applicants wrt to GPA/test scores. Search the college web sites to find out if they want a separate application for scholarships and check the deadlines. Sometimes the deadline for certain scholarships is earlier than deadline for regular admission. Apply early senior year, some merit money is awarded in the fall.

@BrownParent I have a 93 average, but I have not taken the SAT nor the ACT yet
