I am a bit confused with updating the FAFSA and css profile. We filled both forms (FAFSA and css profile) out a few weeks ago with the "will file" option. Since then we have filled our taxes but we need to amend them because we made a mistake on the taxes. I am not sure when we can amend them but we have the amended one filled out we just can't submit it yet (according to our tax software). So should we wait to use the data retrieval tool to update the FAFSA until the amended return is accepted? Does each college have a different deadline for the FAFSA and css profile to be updated by? Or do they all have the same deadline?

Yes, each school has different deadlines and each school will have different ways they want profile corrected. Check each school’s finaid website and ask each school if it’s unclear.

I would manually update fafsa now with the amended return numbers. I think you should keep the status will file until the amended return is submitted, then you can change to already completed. I think amended returns can take a long time to process but I’ve never amended a return. Has your fafsa been selected for verification? If not, you aren’t required to use the DRT and you would be done. If it has been selected for verification, you should probably wait to use the DRT. You may want to contact the schools to explain the situation.

There will be an * after your efc on your SAR and this text in the body of the SAR: “Your FAFSA has been selected for a review process called verification. Your school has the authority to request copies of certain financial documents from you and your parent(s).”

If selected then you will have to order and send in a tax transcript and there may be a form or two you will have to send in. Each school should send you instructions on any forms they need. Watch for emails about this and check online portals if you’ve been given access to any.
