Thanks, BB. I googled “mumps UIUC”… less effective, apparently. At the very end of the second article, the month-by-month count is given. The 101 is a total for the year.
Thanks, dmd, it was impossible to see the entire article on my iPhone for some reason. Now I see that… 101 cases, even if it is for the summer, is scary, especially because the number doubled in the past month!
Very interesting! I had measles when I was 3 (back in the 50’s). I don’t remember as I was so young. But the only vaccinations I had growing up were polio and smallpox — by the time the other immunizations came along, I’d already had all of the common childhood diseases.
Would this mean that someone who gets the actual measles should consider revaccination against any disease of concern that s/he was previously theoretically immune from (due to either vaccination or the actual disease), due to measles erasing such immunity?
Our allergist does periodically do blood tests to check out immunity level titers to determine whether we need vaccinations/revaccinations, as we have low immunities. That may be something to consider.
@ucbalumnus – In the old days, we’d probably not worry about other vaccine-preventable diseases in a patient who survived measles. Cpox, polio, meningitis, pertussis-- because of vaccination rates, the chances of catching ‘wild-type’ (ie community-acquired disease) strains was low. Nowadays-- who knows? In an older kid, whooping cough is distinctly unpleasant but not usually fatal, unlike in infants. In a younger child, cpox is no fun but doesn’t usually have severe forms, unlike in older kids, teens and adults. More ripple effects from anti-vaxxers.
I’m a firm believer in vaccinations, yet I can’t get very hot and bothered about the chicken pox vax. I’ve also personally known kids who’ve gotten chicken pox several years after being vaccinated.
I also take it very seriously. Since I had CP as a child, I suffered thru a bout of shingles on my face 2 years ago. It was horrible- I missed 4 weeks of work, got it in my eye, and still have painful and sensitive areas on my face.
Yes, my husband got shingles at age 40. The pain was so bad he thought he was having a heart attack. I know he wishes a CP vaccine had been available when he was a kid.
