@ucbalumnus Not mentioned is the fact that having chicken pox greatly increases the likelihood of that person developing shingles later in life.
Tonight’s Madame Secretary was all about a measles outbreak on a cruise ship and the effects of not vaccinating and the impending loss of herd immunity if the anti-vaxxer movement persists. It was a very powerful show. The episode is called “The Common Defense”.

It is a tragedy that could have been prevented…
Measles parties?

“Public health officials are warning parents not to be fooled by claims that purposefully exposing their children to the measles virus at so-called “measles parties” is a safe alternative to the MMR vaccine.”
Case at university of Michigan. I was potentially exposed. Waiting on rheumatologist to figure out what to do.
I’m beyond done with these killers who have no regard for human life.
Crossing my fingers for you, @romanigypsyeyes. This is the last thing you (or anyone, really) need!
I blame the week-kneed politicians who don’t have the gumption to do the right thing in state law. Instead, they wait until many have died…

Sounds like she was vaccinated but never got a booster.
“Case at university of Michigan. I was potentially exposed. Waiting on rheumatologist to figure out what to do.”
@romanigypsyeyes, didn’t you get the vaccine with booster when you were young? You’re not much older than my kid and he definitely got both. It was standard by then.
@emilybee yes but the immune suppression treatments affect my immunity.
How are you doing @romanigypsyeyes ?
Rubeola (what I call “regular” measles) is much more serious than Rubella virus (German measles or the “3 day measles” as it was called long ago).
When I was very little we had what was akin to measle parties—at least you could still go play—but only for German measles not ever for regular measles. The idea being that it was better to get it as a kid rather than the possibility of getting it as an adult while pregnant. The whole neighborhood would have it and then done in a few days.
Regular measles meant you were basically quarantined.
Washington state senate votes 25-22 to eliminate personal and philosophical exemptions to MMR vaccine requirement. However, personal and philosophical exemptions to other vaccines are still allowed, as are religious exemptions for all vaccines.
A step in the right direction. Guess they didn’t think they could pass the exemptions for all vaccines but hopefully it will eventually happen.
Given how close the vote was for such a limited bill, that suggests that it is not likely to go much further.
Measles quarantine (for students and staff who can’t prove they’ve been vaccinated) at UCLA and CSULA

There is a separate thread about the quarantine in LA.
