He’s being kicked out of school because he’s a public health hazard.
Re the migrant kids: the reason (at least when I worked in an ESL/mostly refugee school) that immigrant/refugee kids have more barriers to getting shots than the average American. Most parents have the opportunity to give their kids vaccinations at routine check-ups. If American kids aren’t vaccinated, it’s almost always because of an active choice - not a product of circumstances. (Of course, there are always exceptions.)
Getting kids into school ASAP is one of the quickest ways to both get acclimated to a new area and is a vital way to get familial resources. Schools are often the way that families get connected to various safety net and resettlement programs.
Anyone who’s seen me post on here knows how vehemently pro-vaxx I am. For me, it’s a matter of life and death and I have precisely zero patience or sympathy for anti-vaxxers. However, I’m not going to get my cackles up over a handful of immigrant children going to school. They have to pass health checks to get into the country so I’m reasonably certain that they’re not carrying diseases. (Though they should get vaccinated at these appointments, but that’s not usually how things are done.)
Maybe those coming into Michigan have health checks, but those coming across in Florida or being sent to Florida from southern boarder states do not.
I understand why they want the children in schools ASAP, but that doesn’t change the fact that a child coming from another US state (and likely to have been vaccinated) has to go through the state requirements and those attending a school because of a federal mandate do not.
I’m so sorry. We have a county office in our town in FL. We had an appointment, and were seen on time.
I paid $70 to my pediatrician for one test, but he didn’t have the other for college admission. At the county, we could have paid $5 for that same test. The facility and the RN were just lovely. We were the minority race there, but were so impressed
Of course, some of the countries from which many immigrants (including unauthorized immigrants) come from have higher child immunization rates than the US.
^ Yes, people freak out about the risk of unimmunized immigrants from our southern border when in reality Mexico has a higher immunization rate than the US, Canada, the UK, or even Norway.
Google “Why My Family And I Chose NOT To Car Seat” for a funny satire. I will warn you that if you share this on Facebook, however, that you have to clarify it’s a satire! It seems obvious to me, but some of my FB friends thought it was for real.
Spoiler if you haven’t seen Good Place this week - Bad Janet’s proof of enduring evil includes “women in $400 yoga pants who won’t vaccinate their children”.
Samoa has already arrested at least one anti-vax advocate.
Good.
As much as I despise parents who don’t vaccinate their kids, I think those who purposely spew this for profit/power/whatever should be charged with murder.
