If you repeat a year in boarding school how does it work with your transcript? Will my grades next year simply be replaced with what I have this year, or does my transcript have both sets of grades?

Also what if my school currently keeps a GPA and the school I'm going to does not? Will my transcript have my GPA or 9th grade? Maybe even 9th and 10th grade?

Im just kind of confused, sorry for all the questions.

At the big NE school that I know best, the transcripts are kept completely separate. When you apply to college, they send both. As far as using credits from your previous school to meet graduation requirements at your new school, the registrar does that on a case by case basis. Hope that helps!

For purposes of placement and graduation credits: The registrar and someone in academics or student services will review your transcript and decide what counts and what doesn’t. What is equivalant and what is to be repeated. If the BS knows the school you came from well, they will pretty easily slide you into the correct class/level. However, if they don’t know your school, or if you did something splashy or rigorous that does not jump off of the transcript page, you might want to send them some explanatory information, class syllabus or copy of your final exam: textbook, novel’s read, writing samples. That will help them determine the rigor and equivalency of your old school’s classes. Don’t be too pushy, just helpful.

For purposes of college applications: for four-year students, colleges are sent just sent the four-year boarding school transcript. If you did something really nifty at your old school, you can send that transcript along with your college applications on your own. If you are just doing three years at your boarding school, the college counseling office will send the 3-year BS transcript, plus the transcript from your old school.

Each college calculates GPA differently, so don’t worry about it too much

Yea I was asking in relation to college applications. Im doing 3 years, will they send the 3 years BS transcript and then my 9th grade transcript. Or 3 yrs BS transcript and then the 2 years I did here. Becuase my sophomore second semester grades aren’t too shabby.

Would it be possible to just have the 3 years at BS sent and then my 9th grade year? Just like disregarding my first 10th grade year if I talked to counselors. I imagine that if I repeat 10th grade they won’t need my first 10th grade grades?

Or does it not even matter…because my 9th and 10th grade grades will be on the same transcript from my old school. I’m not worried about GPA, just curious about how all this would work.

Toadstool is correct. If you are a four year student, you don’t have to worry about your old school. If you are a three year student, it all goes. Unfortunately, you can’t pick and choose which part of your prior transcript you want sent. There was an interesting article about all of this last year in the New York Times- I think maybe Watertester put up a link to it?

If you are planning on competing DI or DII athletics in college, you do need to send all transcripts (even if you were 4 years at bs) to the NCAA.

Alright…I guess I’m fine with that. If I have a great 3 years, 1 bad grade in 10th shouldn’t really matter. And my new school doesn’t do GPAs so I don’t have to worry about that being dragged down or anything.

That is not how it was handled at my son’s school. The old school(s) transcripts were basically incorporated into the boarding school transcript. It showed the courses and credits (and grades, I think) and the name of the school. The grades did not figure into the boarding school GPA.
