When should i get a job/volunteer/internship?

So i am going to go to UCSD & i want to volunteer at the hospital, get into an internship if possible, and have a job in order to have some money. Should i do all three? When should I start? Please help!

Seems like you and I have similar interests! You should hmu

And to answer your question I’d recommend reaching out to these hospitals as soon as possible! Definitely during first quarter.

@tqclassof21 thank you!!(: & really that’s awesome!

@dayannaortiz6 what’s your email?

Do all three! Try to do at least two in your first quarter so you’ll be used to it. There are three hospitals on campus (Jacobs Medical Center, VA Medical Center, Scripps Memorial Hospital) and two more close by (UCSD Hillcrest Medical Center, Scripps Green Hospital). I used to volunteer at the VA and I can tell you all five locations are always looking for new volunteers.

On campus jobs are easy to find. If you want something like dining, shuttles or filing papers at a campus department, you could get hired within the week. If you wanna be in a research lab, start applying and emailing during summer and you’ll have one by week two.

@DoctorP how do you know where to look for internships?

And what exacty did you do in the VA medical center?

@dayannaortiz6 eventually you’ll get access to porttriton.ucsd.edu, where a lot of employers and professors post jobs and internships. until then you could just search regular job sites or look up research groups that you like, such as on biology.ucsd.edu or healthsciences.ucsd.edu or salk.edu or lji.org.

I worked in the MRI center at the VA; it was a pretty easy job. Mostly I would check patients in, scan and enter stacks of old patient records, keep the MRI techs informed on patient status, and work on homework. Sometimes I’d hang out in the back and learn about what was going on in a particular MRI or how the machine worked. It was a pretty relaxed and fun experience. I had a late shift, so there weren’t too many patients either. Lots of background checks and security clearances though.

@DoctorP that really interests me, thank you so much for the information i appreciate it a lot!
