When should I start applying for engineering internships?

Hi guys,
I'm currently a senior at college. Since I switched major to Mech Engineering in the middle of my junior year, my adviser told me that I have to take an extra 1.5 years to graduate. Therefore, the whole thing takes 5.5 years in total. I have no previous engineering internship as of this time and just began to think if I should start finding one this summer 2014 or next summer (2015), or am I too late?
Also, when do people mostly start applying if they take the normal 4-year route?
I really appreciate everyone's input!

You’re not too late but start applying now. As in tonight. Get on it.

For summer of 2015, you should start applying in September of 2014 optimally.

I know this is a stupid question since every undergrads should know, that’s why no one bother to answer the question except one. I guess I will have to hit the career center to ask these questions. But thanks you Vladenschlutte, I will start searching.

If the answer is answered correctly, it only takes one.

Actually you are too late for my company for summer 2014. Applicantions were needed by mid Dec. Management is going thru them now.

He’s too late for a lot of companies, but he’s not too late for all companies. It’s not so late that it’s not worth trying.

Yeah, there are tons of pretty reputable (Fortune 100+) companies still looking for interns out there right now. I have pulled an internship from a spring career fair before. It’s absolutely doable.
