Most of my college apps are due in Jan/Feb so i was wondering when should i start my essays? Also i need some ideas on what to write for my "Why Rice" essay!

The sooner the better honestly, because once you get back into school, trust me you will probably have a billion things going on, with school, ECs, scholarship applications, etc. If you can get at least some rough drafts done this summer, it will make your life easier in the fall.

As for "Why XYZ" essays, look into what the university offers, and how their offerings connect with your current interests. Maybe they have a unique research program for undergrads, or a particular major with renowned professors. Don't forget to talk about not only what the university can do for you, but what you will bring to the university community.

The why Rice essay is really short. Mine was majorly sucky. I started my longer essays the day or two before they were due, and they were mediocre at best, but I really don't care. The other short ones are really easy to do, so you shouldn't really freak about them. Even though my essays sucked, I still got in. :D

Right now. Literally. I started mine July 1st, the day the Common App launched.
