I'm a junior in Calc AB right now, and I just found out that our school doesn't have a BC class, only an independent study (but it still shows up on transcripts). I was planning on taking only the BC exam during my senior year after the class, but now that I know that BC is just an independent study, I'm wondering if I should self-study it this year (while AB is still fresh in my head). This is my only concern: would taking the Calc BC independent study make my transcript seem more rigorous to colleges than not? If so, how significant is the difference?

Self-study it this year.

If you have the time. You’re currently a junior, so you’re probably busy w/ other stuff. If you think you can devote 30-50 hrs total to focusing hard on advanced material, then go ahead. However, keep in mind that you can’t learn A LOT of BC topics until you finish learning integrals in AB. If you do decide to study BC, buy a good review book off amazon (PR or Petersons - any OLD edition is fine), and study it hard. Do a lot of old FRQs, and there’s also a very nice site called: justmathtutoring.com

Otherwise, just do it senior year - it really won’t make a huge difference. Good luck :)

Thanks for the responses. :]

This was a pretty stupid question on my part. I care WAY too much about what colleges will think.
I am pretty busy now, but I’ll try to do some BC stuff every weekday for about an hour. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll just not take the test and get my refund minus $13 and take it next year. I really want to take BC because then I’m done with calculus for college. And it seems like a waste to spend $86 on AB and another $86 on BC when BC counts for both.
Equilibrium, I just realized you are the person who wrote this http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/mathematics-computer-science/976004-self-studying-calculus-bc-while-taking-calc-ab.html. I have it bookmarked and am planning to use it as a guide. :'D Can I pester you with questions about calculus and the BC test?

I forgot all of calculus II already (seriously, it is nearly useless - i have never used most of the stuff covered in that class - you just need to know the bare basics of calc ii and you’ll be fine), so I don’t know if I’ll be very helpful.

If you have any questions about the subject itself, yahoo answers is pretty helpful. If you have questions on preparing for the exam, it’d probably be best to just ask on CC - I don’t check CC as often as I used to, so it probably would take me a while to respond to you. Good luck! :)
