When to accept a scholarship?

My son just received notice that he was awarded an academic scholarship from his #2-choice school. He is still waiting to hear if he was accepted at his top choice. The scholarship notice came with an agreement that he is supposed to sign and return (nothing is mentioned about a deadline for doing this).

Should he return it right away? If he does go to this school, he definitely wants the scholarship. But if he ends up not going to this school, is it wrong to accept the scholarship?

Thank you!

Call the school and ask for an extension or give them a projected date.

Is your son still in high school?

If so, definitely call the college and ask what the deadline is. No school should be expecting/demanding acceptances this early.

Is this a NMSF scholarship or what?

Anyway…if the school insists that the scholarship be accepted soon, then do so. You will still be free to choose elsewhere later. Accepting a scholarship is NOT a binding contract to attend the school.

Yes, he’s a h.s. senior. It’s a state school (OOS for him) and it’s an “automatic” scholarship – given to students with a certain GPA and ACT/SAT. He’s decided to sign it now and accept the scholarship in case he decides to go there, but he’s quite certain he’ll go to choice #1, if accepted (which is very likely, he just hasn’t heard yet).

Thanks for the input.

Congrats to your son?

Can I ask which school gave him an assured scholarship?

Did the scholarship require an acceptance by a certain date??
