When to apply - Australia

Hey all,

I am in year 9 in Australia, but I am gathering all the info now for when i want to apply in a couple of years to American universities.

Our school year begins in early February, and ends early December, except in year 12, when final examinations finish mid-November. I will finish school this time in 2014. My question is: when should I apply? Should I apply for entry into college in 2014, or 2015? My main issue is that VTAC offers come out mid-January, and must be accepted, rejected or deferred before matriculation in February. If I don't get into one of my choices for an American university, I would like to attend an Australian one, but I don't really want to wait around for a year before commencement.

On that note, can any Australians please tell me what the deferment policy says about applying to other schools? Can I, for example, defer an offer from the University of Melbourne for 12 months, and then not come back if I get a better offer in this US. If not, how should I apply to ensure a safety net?

Any help would be appreciated,
Thank you,
Charles

I am a year 12 student in Melbourne, I had the same problem and no one answered me, so I decide to answer your question. Personally, I am going for Melbourne applying through VTAC like any other students, and at the same time I apply for the US universities. Normally, the application deadline for US universities is 31 December or something like that. You should go to whatever university you apply for in Australia starting around March, and if you get accepted into one of the universities in the US you should just go and quit Melbourne.

^ Exactly that.

That’s what I did. If you get 99.95 and scholarships, deferring might be difficult if you don’t make it into US colleges, as often scholarships change.

Hi everyone, I’m from Melbourne and I am preparing my application packages as well
My counselor and I are preparing school transcripts, and I’m not sure if I’m right, but all we did is printing out my school reports in year 11 and 12 (I’ve just been in Australia for 2 years) plus a record of my two VCE subjects I completed last year (History Revolution and Further Math). Finally, he signed every school report and that was it. I am wondering if I need anything else?
Do I need a paper to explain the ENTER system and the fact that my ENTER score will be released in November? Should I mention it in “additional information” or do I have to ask my counselor to write it? Can I write it myself? Seriously, my counselor has no clue, and he just listens to what I tell him. I hope somebody here can give me some advices.

Thank you  And good luck with the VCE exams in two weeks :)

Your counselor should do it - I wrote up a little bit of information explaining which reports were which in my additional information. Do you have transcripts for the 9th and 10th grades? I included mine with a short explanation about the grading scheme, but then again, I did all of my high schooling in the same place.

Thank you, schrodingerscat :). I have included my grade 9th and 10th report already (and another additional letter to explain Vietnamese high school system). I’m glad that everything about transcript is done.
