ED is usually when you really want to go to that school (it’s your first choice). Since it’s early, you might also get more financial aid…or at the very least, be the first to get a grab at it. EA is similar, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be your first choice school, I guess. Regular decision is just any other school.

Eeek! No, you don’t get more financial aid with ED.

ED is when you are absolutely certain that you will go to a school and you either don’t need financial aid or your financial aid is super clear (the school has an online calculator, there is no business or property, there are no custodial parents). In general, it is a bad idea to apply ED if you need any money because you have to withdraw applications from other schools and the financial aid at the ED school might not be as generous as at other schools.

EA is when you are ready early (are happy with all your test scores, etc) and want an answer early. It does NOT require a commitment so it’s safe as far as financial aid.

RD is for when you want to apply to a bunch of schools and compare awards.

Most students do not apply ED or EA. Not all schools offer EA. ED is generally not a good choice for students needing financial aid.

thank u very much!
