When to get textbooks.

I keep hearing different things from people about this. Some say not to get it until you've talked to the professor after classes start and looking at hte syllabus since sometimes you don't need some books that may be listed as required online.
Others are telling me to get the books I know I'll need and get the others later but how are you supposed to know what you really need since like I said before, all the books are listed as required, and reading some other stuff here, a lot of times you don't actually need them.
I also tried looking online at sites like Amazon, Half, Chegg and they don't carry the majority of the books I need anyways so it looks like I'll have to get them from the bookstore...

I personally would recommend buying them now and returning them if you find that you do not need them.

That way you do not have to worry about books running out.

I just ordered three of mine from Chegg. I still need to get two from the bookstore, but it helps to save some money. Also, if you end up not needing the book and you rent it from Chegg, you can return it within the drop/add period and they will refund you.

Heh, 3 responses, and 3 different answers. Here’s mine.

I almost always wait until the first week of classes to buy books. The main reason is international editions. If the book is a reference and there isn’t homework assigned from it, I can often buy the international edition for about 1/10th the cost. It really depends on the class you’re taking though, sometimes you just know you’re gonna need the book.

I’ve had good success with textbooks from abebooks.com

I think renting books is an even bigger ripoff then buying them, personally.

I tried looking for the chm2045 book online but I cant find it anywhere.

I’ve heard that from other people about the CHM2045 book. If you can’t find it, I bet nobody can.

If the bookstore is selling the book in a bundle which is customized for UF, you will not find that ISBN on the internet. You need to call the bookstore and ask for the ISBNs of the components of bundle.

Just reading in the newspaper today about a new law which is going to require that things be provided in unbundled forms so that kids do not have to get the entire package if they don’t want to. Should help with trying to figure out what separate ISBN numbers are, I imagine. Anyone take PSYCH 2012 before, using the Psychology and Life w/ mypsychlab access code? They are going to a new edition this year (19th instead of 18th), so, of course, I can’t find any used books in that edition. Trying to determine if we need the mypsychlab access code or if we can get by with just a book. Oh … she also has Robin west for the instructor.

BTW, OP … we’re buying online books this year for the first time (I mean, not going thru the bookstore for all of them). I was nervous about doing it as I know I can’t sell these back for what we’re charged if need be and I’m nervous that I won’t get what I think I’m paying for … but we’re giving it a shot. We’ll see …
S never gets his books until he’s been to class. He asks the instructors for sure what’s needed, and he doesn’t mind if he’s a little late. Got into trouble once in an economics course because he waited too long to get a special workbook than went along with the text and all the bookstores were out, and, of course, that prof tested from that workbook. Had to really scramble at the last minute, but he’s still not changing his ways. D would go crazy doing it that way. Guess you gotta consider your comfort level.

Thanks, I suppose I will have to buy all my books at the bookstore.

Sunstriker, the only time you will have to buy them at the bookstore is if it’s something not available at all on the internet. The only book my D has bought so far has been a STA2023 workbook that was written by the instructors and we couldn’t find it. Otherwise you will save so much money not using the bookstore.

For example, a book for THE2000, the Creative Spirit is $87 used in the bookstore. We got it off Ebay in like new condition for $10 including shipping.

You just can’t buy books off the net at the last minute, it takes some planning ahead unless you don’t mind not having books for a week or two once classes start.

I found it easier to find books online when searching for the title and author as opposed to the ISBN. I’ve never had a problem with purchasing the wrong book online.

I checked ISIS and it said that I was eligible for textbook purchases against my financial aid awards. In order to have the money reimbursed, do I have to make my purchases through the UF bookstore? Also, if I don’t use the financial aid money will I get it back later?

You’re eligible for deferment, so you go to the bookstore, buy your books, give them your Gator 1, and pay nothing. Then when financial aid disperses, they deduct your books before giving you your financial aid.

If you spend no money at the bookstore, then 0 dollars are deducted, and you get the full amount of financial aid.

It’s so that if you’re broke, you don’t have to wait till financial aid to get books.

Some other bookstores around gainesville offer similar programs I think, where you basically buy on credit with no interest. And pay a couple weeks later.

Buying books in the bookstore is the hugest ripoff imaginable. I’ve been buying my books online for 2 years and have never had a problem. My biochem book this semester is listed as $155 used, while on half.com they have brand new ones listed for $64.

Yeah, you definitely need to get the ISBNs of each individual product in the bundles because I believe if you purchase all your books from the UF Bookstore, you’ll eventually get ripped off. You could also use the authors name; that’s personally what I use. My CGS2315 textbook on the UF Bookstore costs $158.00; all I need is the textbook and the online code. The online code costs $75 and the book rental costs $25 so I’ll basically save $58 looking elsewhere.
