DD has been accepted to honors college at my alma mater. Public university. She has 10 outstanding LAC RD apps as well as another university. Should I go ahead and pay the deposit at my alma mater? She has great aid there and can apply for even more. Never been thru process before.
Is this an enrollment deposit? If so…just wait.
If it’s a housing deposit…see if it’s refndable.
Enrollment
Unless this was early DECISION…just wait.
Otherwise…
It it’s an enrollment deposit…why would you pay it NOW? You don’t need to make an enrollment decision until May 1.
Why do you want to pay this now? Your kid has been accepted. That acceptance isn’t going to go away if you wait.
It’s my one and only kid so just asking questions. Thanks for the responses.
Unless by paying the deposit early can bring you some benefit, for instance, early registration or housing reservation, I would suggest to wait till you receive the admission notices and financial aid packages from all schools that you are still considering at this point particularly when it is non refundable.
In our case enrollment deposit was directly related to housing options. We paid early and he got his first choice housing. The deposit was not that much so we risked losing it if he changed his mind. We were ok with that and it worked out for us.
Check for any deadlines and if refundable. Plus any advantages such as in choosing housing. If any deposits are made be sure to figure how to notify the school and housing- notifying one may not be sufficient for notifying the other (our flagship U’s “public” dorms did not automatically get the U’s deposit refund request). Note the specific wording on the request- required to reserve your place by date…
@wis75 thanks. There is an enrollment deposit required to get into the housing process. I will look into that.
“We paid early and he got his first choice housing.”
A year ago we also put the deposit down a bit early to get first choice on housing, but not this early (more like late March).
I think that housing deposits are refundable before May 1…they just want you to make it to “anchor” the decision of that school in your mind.
