I am currently a junior and will graduate in May of 2014.

I will be applying for grad school in the fall. I have not looked into it too much, but I think most of the application deadlines are in the winter.

When (what months?) do you guys suggest registering and taking the GRE?
I will not take it this semester. I plan on spending some time during the summer to prepare for the test.

S1 took the summer and reviewed for it and tested in September. The timing worked well for him. (Its nice to walk away knowing your preliminary score.)

Thanks for the reply. Has your son commented on how similar the test is to the SAT?

Some of my friends who have taken it says it’s very similar to the SAT and the level difficulty is about the same. In fact, they told me they thought the GRE verbal section was easier than the SAT’s. It’s been like 4-5 years since they the SAT so I don’t think they could accurately comprae the 2.

joszacem’s timeline is pretty good - use the summer to prepare (if you feel you need to), and take the GRE either at the end of the summer or the very beginning of the fall. You want to make sure that you do not have to worry about it during the hectic end of the semester (which will already be more hectic with grad applications due), and want to make sure to leave open possible dates to retake it, if necessary.

It is fairly similar to the SAT, and not really any more difficult, but depending on your major some sections may seem tougher. English majors have done little or no math in the couple of years prior to the test, and engineering majors often struggle with the verbal section.

S1 said he felt it was easier (I also seem to thinking the same when I took it back in the stone age). I don’t think its any easier you just finished 3 years of college and your knowledge base is greatly increased.

I’m an engineering major. When I took the SAT in high school, I think I scored in the top few percentile in all categories. But…these years in engineering have made my writing somewhat bad.

I’ve forgotten a lot of vocab from readings throughout high school. I don’t think I need to do amazing on the verbal section.
I’m sure I need to review high school math as well.

Is there a deadline for ‘registration’ if I want to take it in the fall? I browsed through the GRE site and it seems it’s okay to register a month before the test.

Take the GRE as soon as possible. You may have to take the subject GRE in October or November (and you will probably be applying in December) so make sure you take the general GRE before then!
