When to take the SAT Test this year

Hey guys,
I am in the 11th standard CBSE and I have just finished my annual exams. My 12th class begins in the first week of June.
I have gone through a lot of websites as to when one should take the SAT. Some say a good 4-5 months is needed while others say that one or two months are only required. I even found websites which recommend preparing for SAT from grade one.
I know that it depends on the individual but I am very good at math and fairly good in english. I am the topper of my class (1st out of 40 students).
I would like to whether it is advisable to take the test in June (2nd) as May 5th seems too early.

Forgive me if I have made any errors in this post. :)

I think you should definitely take the June SAT, if not the May one. It doesn’t take 4-5 months to prepare for SAT if you’re preparing consistently and sincerely. I’d say 2-3 months must be sufficient. Though, again, it depends on how much time are you willing to devote to SAT prep.

Yes, If you already in 12th, time to take your SATs. Take the first one as early as possible, if you get a good score in the first attempt you are done. And if you need to improve your score then you have enough time for the second attempt and well ahead of filling of applications, which begin on 01 August. And also depending on your program and college list you might have to appear for Subject SATs too, which are held in specific months only in India, if I recall correctly. Somebody who has appeared recently can confirm this.

why don’t you take a sample SAT test and see where your scores are?

You could take it in May, but do NOT take it without preparation. It is best to go in prepared, take as many sample tests and study from the SAT book. But since you are already in your 12th, you should take it in June and again October (or is it December for the very last chance).

(Fairly good in English is no indication for the SAT test…:))…But usually if you READ a lot, you have an advantage.

Thanks for all your help guys (idream17,anialways fall2016parent )
I really want to order the SAT book but my father is of out of town and I need to wait. I took some practice tests and I have some difficulties in answering the writing section. Could you recommend books that specifically deal with writing?
I am also attending a summer program in the US in July (fully funded), hence I really want to make best use of my holidays and crack the SAT before my trip to US.
Furthermore, I learnt that NUS doesn’t require the SAT for Indian cbse students (only board marks are required). But having a good SAT score could increase your chances, right? Could you elaborate on the keys factors that make a good application to NUS Econ/ Biz school.
Thanks…

I studied for the ACT( Substitute for SAT) in a week. Go figure
And for the prep for SAT IIs was 2 weeks before the exam.

And, where are you heading this summer??

@ mrinal2207: wow! thats cool!.. any advice on NUS (national university of singapore) part of the post? doesn’t writing sat improve one’s chances?

Yes, getting good scores on the SATs improves your chance there.
But, as far as I know, they favor your Board marks more.

@mrinal2207 it is a business (entrepreneurship) related summer program in philadelphia

Well, I’ve been preparing like 5 hours a week since march, and in april have started writing a full test every 2 days and solving questions from different books, and going through time drills. it all depends on your speed. it doesn’t take 4 months. I say if you can prepare properly for the june sat, then do it! Just spend a few hours a day going through time drills and solving sample papers. I’d strongly suggest writing an essay a day to, in the time limit. good luck!

PS- im taking may sat :)

Darth, thats cool man/girl !! I am going to summer@brown. :)

@mrinal2207 thanks (i am man by the way) and wow summer@ brown is awesome.
@ avnesh95 thanks for advice!!! I really want to take the sat only once and get a good/great score if possible…good luck for the may sat…

Darth, thats cool dude!!
All the best, I am still undecided whether to take the ACT again or not…

@Mrinal2207 - My friend had gone for the Summer@Brown program last year. He really liked it.
