I have been accepted by Clemson University and University of Maine, Orono for MS in Civil Engineering.

But all they say is they don't have funds AT THIS TIME. I have also emailed some professors but the replies are same.

"We currently have no funds to support you."

Does it mean that they want to support me but unfortunately they don't have any funds right now. And when it becomes available they're going to support me. Or are they just saying it???

When will the funds be available??? Is there a date when the university budget is separated for supporting students??

Thanks guys...

I don't think they're going to magically have funds soon to be able to support you. Unless suddenly there is a big gift. The chances of funding for your first year are slim. It's possible you could get funding for the second year but not a sure thing.

Yeah, unfortunately I think that is just the polite way of saying "We want you to come, but we are not going to pay you." Funding may be possible in the following year, but nothing is guaranteed. Of course for the best clarity, contact the department and ask. Could not hurt anything and may help you with your decision.

New_user:
I think you are right mate... but while I was told that they don't have funds right now,,,, one of my friends who has also been accpeted by University of Maine (Civil dept but different majors.... I've applied for structural engineering... and he in Environmental Engineering) was told that "The department has indicated that there are no positions for assistantship."
Thats a deadend for him,,isn't it?

Atleast I was told to contact Professors to see if there are any opputunities for RA/TA..

Just being optimistic......
or am I overlooking real facts ie: they are never gonna pay me...

If you were told to contact professors for possible RA/TAs then start contacting!:) That does at least sound more hopeful than "The department has indicated that there are no positions for assistantship." Money is tight everywhere but maybe a professor has a grant (s)he could support you on.

I have contacted. And the replies were:

Prof. #1. "Check with me in the late summer to see if there are chage of plans."

Prof. #2 "We have positions available. The selection depends on your record and experience"

Obviously, there is no point in contacting prof.#1 until late summer.

And Prof. #2 hasn't replied after that .....its been more than a week now.
Maybe he's just too busy.
I've already emailed #2 a couple of times.

Do you think its a good idea to send repeated emails? I think he's just ignoring me.

I think I'm back to square one.

I would not necessarily berate #2 with repeated e-mails if you have already inquired about applying for the position and sent any relevant supporting documents. Just make sure that you have done what you need to to be in the running when the time comes and wait for that time, I guess.

Are there only 2 professors whom you can contact for RA/TAs?

Yes, I have already sent supporting documents along with the application. I hope he's reviewing my documents!! ;-)

There are other professors as well. But either they didn't reply or they just said the same thing. Currently no funding. :-(

By the way, is it a good idea to send emails to a number of professors at the same time?

That I do not really know. I would assume it would depend on the nature of the program and what exactly you are applying for in terms of RA/TAs. If they gave you a list of profs that may need TAs that you would only be affiliated with in terms of teaching for them, I would go ahead and send as many e-mails as necessary (assuming you would be qualified to teach any of those courses). If it is more RAs where you would then be doing your thesis with that prof then I would only contact the ones who you are interested in working with. Sorry I cannot help more on that. Again, good luck!

Thanks for your suggestions New_user.

I think I'll just wait...........
