A few schools have asked me where they are on my list of schools. What does this mean? Is it a relatively good sign?
It means absolutely nothing. Don’t read into it. It is a standard question that everybody is asked. I was asked this question during all 6 boarding school interviews.
I do not think that it is accurate to state: “It means absolutely nothing.” A negative response such as “I only applied here as a safety” or "I only applied here because my parents made me " could impact the admissions decision.
I also think that for a very well qualified candidate at a non-super elite school that a positive & enthusiastic response could result in scholarship consideration when a more tepid response might make the interviewer think that the school is not among the student’s top choices.
Interviewers ask questions for a reason so it would be unwise for an applicant to assume that one’s responses to interview questions have no ramifications.
Agreed. It doesn’t mean much that you were asked the question, basically everybody is. But your response does matter. Good luck!
@Publisher Thanks for clearing that up. I think there might have been a misunderstanding and we are both on the same page. I meant that the question itself doesn’t mean that your chances of getting in are good or bad. Your answer could impact your chances though, I just didn’t touch on that
One of my DC only applied to one school. In our ignorance we didn’t realize it was one of the most competitive. But, when that question came up, DC could honestly say that it was the top choice and DC wouldn’t consider going anywhere else. DC was admitted and, FWIW, this may have been the “hook” that made the difference #:-S
wow ok jumping on late, but i never got asked this question hAh
Neither did I, just “where else are you applying” at everywhere but Choate. but that doesn’t matter because at the time of that interview I wasn’t applying anywhere else.
