We dont do valedictorians because our school is so competitive, but 9 out of the top ten students for class of 2014 went to the university of michigan. The other one went to MSU honors college.

C/o 2015’s (I’m c/o 2017) valedictorian went to Dartmouth on a full scholarship.

Val and Sal Louisiana State University

My daughters’ high school doesn’t rank, but the top 10 students are acknowledged. Of the three I know of, one is going to Princeton, another, USC and the third Berkeley.

UMBC…

@microssrunner17 If your school is so competitive, why did the 9 top kids go to UMich?? It’s definitely a great school, but I’m assuming it’s your state flagship…

My HS does not rank and has no valedictorian.

If you want to know about the genuine achievers in life, asking about valedictorian is probably not going to get you the answers.

It’s unknown to me why any of them personally chose to go there since everyone has their own reasons, but most of them were planning to pursue masters or PhDs, so it’s a win-win situation to go to a top ranked school with instate tuition rather than paying $40k+ a year for undergrad OOS and then racking up even more for grad school. I know a kid who applied to university of Chicago and Yale but then decided on UMich to save more money for grad school.

Over the past 5 or so years, my kids’ school has seen top kids go to Ivies (couple Harvard, Penn, Cornell and Columbia) and several to other top 20s (few each to Duke, Northwestern, Stanford, ND). But an increasing number of the top kids are going to the state flagship (Ohio State). Others go to U of Cincy or Miami. And that is true at other regional top suburban public high schools and some privates based on discussions with friend with kids at those high schools.

Big reason is money. Vast majority of those kids come from full pay everywhere families. They either don’t have (or won’t pay) full freight to attend top 20 schools. 3 or 4 top of one class were awarded Eminence Fellow scholarships at Ohio State (full cost of attendance given to about 25 kids each year). 2 took the offer. Other went to Vanderbilt. Other kids chase high merit awards which pretty much eliminate many of the top elite schools. As costs continue to increase, I would expect those trends to continue. Talking with people in other states, I understand similar trends exist elsewhere as well.

Valedictorian went to Harvard. Everyone who was ranked in the top 50 seemed to go to one of HYPSM, Chicago, Columbia, Penn, or Berkeley (which is around a hour away from our school).
