So I'm currently I Junior in high school. Since freshman year, I've sought to enroll in West Point, and have been doing my best to stay competitive for a seat in the class of 2019 (My high school class graduates in 2015). So far, I have a 4.4 - 4.5 GPA, a 21 on my ACT, I have half a dozen office positions in total for my class and other clubs, I'm on my school's Varsity Track and Cross Country team. This year I made all conference in Cross Country, but haven't qualified for state. I also wrote a speech for The Veterans of Foreign Wars, winning 1st place locally. And I will be going to Boys State at the end of my Junior year. Academically, where do you guys think I stand on qualifying for a seat at West Point???
Any input would be very much appreciated. Thanks! :D

Is your GPA on a 4/5 point scale? And is that weighted or unweighted?

Other than your ACT, you look pretty good. The 21 is low though, and if you really want a decent shot you should attempt for at least a 28, preferibly higher though.

Get that ACT score up. Also try the SAT.

Yeah, it’s that’s on a 5.0 scale. I’ve taken honor and weighted classes since freshman year. There’s an ACT coming up later this month, so hopefully I can raise it considerably before applying. And why try the SAT over the ACT?

I’m afraid that a 21 ACT will not get you in. I would suggest you also take the SAT, as some kids just have a better knack for one test over the other. Once you see which test you do better on, just focus on studying for that one. If this is your dream, you will need to study intensely, and even take a prep course for the test. Getting the score up is imperative if you hope to get in.

Then studying it will be xD Going to be pretty tough, but if it gets me in, it’ll definitely be worth it. Thanks, man

Hey, thanks alot for replying to my thread…i’m pretty certain you know much more about admissions to Westpoint than I do but since you asked me to look over your thread, i feel that you have a very solid chance on getting in.
My school is pretty big on JROTC and we had 4 kids apply to Westpoint last year (it’s a small school), 3 of the 4 were accepted, and 2 are attending right now (the other chose to go to Naval Academy). Your application is definitely comparable to those in my school that got in. However, i feel that you should work to improve your ACT score…The average gpa of the students in my school that got in was a 90 while the average SAT score was a 1925 (out of 2400). Your gpa is very high but your ACT score is slightly low (a 1925 on the SAT should be equivalent to a 28/29 on the ACT). I think if you just bump your ACT score up you’ll definitely get in as long as you have a congressional nom. Once again, thanks for replying to my questions.

Post a thread on this site: http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/
there will be a larger response.

I think my chances of getting a nom is pretty good right now. After I wrote a speech, it definitely improved my odds. And I will definitely check out that forum. And update me on your preporation process: Academics, physical, etc. Here’s my email - icedzealot@live.com

And Don’t mention it!

Your stats look really good. In terms of your admission to West Point, you look solid. Make sure you get all that stuff in early when the Portal opens in the Spring, and like others said, bump that ACT up.

ALSO, I’m not sure where you are from or how competitive Congressional Nominations are, but you may want to consider writing a letter to your Congressman/woman and notifying said individual that you are interested in attending a service academy. Therefore, when they go to review your application next fall, they will see an example of your interest.

Grades don’t matter. As long as you have decent grades (4.0) and average SAT/ACT scores, you can get in. I go to a all boys military school, where many cadets have joined the army, airforce, navy(SEALs), with the former head of Cadet Command (JROTC/ROTC), Major General(ret.) Arthur Bartell as the president. Join JROTC and get a nomination from you SAI. If you didn’t, I don’t know why any of you want to go to a military academy. Do people realize how that the military is the real s***. Also, do you realize how harsh you will be treated in your first year? You will be made fun of, laughed at, and bullied. Make a final decision, don’t just be like " I want to join the military because it is cool".

Sorry for my ranting, I feel like doing this to every thread here but I am too lazy. If your decision is firm and absolute, good luck in your admissions and I hope you all the best in your future endeavors. HOOAH!

IcedZealot, if you don’t mind, could you give us an update as to how the admission went with you? I am also interested in applying to West Point, and I’m currently researching about WP online right now, haha.
