OH WOW. I do love Maine… (Not that this is about me, just saying…) Both great choices though.
Wow. Got Off 2 wls. I suggest playing powerball this week!
Is Bates a Sept or Jan admit?
@wisteria100 , September. Think I will buy a lottery ticket, just in case:-)
Let her pick it!
ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT YOU MUST KEEP US UPDATED.
Since Bates would save the purchase of other plane tickets, the purchase of the Thanksgiving flight should not factor into the equation.
I agree with @citymama9 that she should look at the choice between the 2 schools as a fresh and new decision. Can’t go wrong either way, though.
^Are both affordable?
Can she revisit Bates?
What’s her deadline to decide?
Love reading this thread. Very exciting saga. : )
@MYOS1634 , the money is exactly the same, and she wouldn’t revisit, because no students are there. It is entirely possible, as I mentioned that she has missed the chance, because she didn’t see the email for two days. (Did I not remind her, about 5000 times, that she needs to check her email every day? Why yes, yes I did.) But the complicating factor too is that we are going overseas on the 4th of July. Stay tuned…
Oh boy. The saga continues lol. You both seem to be taking it in stride though. Bates was the one school where D was waitlisted that we considered maybe not confirming elsewhere but neither of us had the patience or stamina after all the visiting and applications. What a great choice to have! Kenyon or Bates. Good luck with your decision.
In the end D did not accept any waitlists but it was about this time last year that Smith asked if she’d reconsider them and take a “trial year”. I never even mentioned it to D, just didn’t want to open up that can of worms. And what the heck is a trial year anyways?
Trial year? Wow. That’s a first…
@Lindagaf would you mind posting your daughters stats like scores, gpa, etc.? im really interested in Dickinson/F&M and she seems like a great applicant!
I’m guessing they still have a spot for her. I know it’s a bit of a mental adjustment but don’t see why she wouldn’t choose bates if it was her top school.
Congrats to your daughter, @Lindagaf!
Our extended family has their own “accepted off the waitlist” story except for law school instead of undergrad. My niece was set to go to law school in Texas. Three weeks before the start of classes, UMich accepted her off the waitlist. She had to change gears pretty quickly and had some trouble finding housing two weeks before the semester began. BUT three years later, she graduated in May, has had a wonderful education and made friends for life. (She’s studying for the Bar Exam and has a job lined up in our hometown starting in September, which makes my sister very, very happy!)
I guess the moral of the story is “don’t be afraid to take advantage of opportunities…even if they come at the wrong time.”
Linda, a question I would have for your daughter is: What was it about Bates that made it a frontrunner for you, and can you find that at Kenyon?
@jjohnross her SAT was 2240. Her GPA is about 3.75, with mostly all honors or AP classes. She has taken 7 APs, one as a self-studied course. She doesn’t have all her test results, but so far she has three scores of 5. The usual assortment of ECs, along with a musical instrument. No sports. She didn’t get into two mega-reach schools, and was waitlisted at a third that has since notified that students won’t be taken off the WL. See post #83 to see where she applied.
@citymama9 I think many of the things that attracted her to Bates, she seems to have also found at Kenyon. She is happy about Kenyon. She does now have one area of doubt about Bates, because though she visited, students were not yet back in session. Two concerns are partying and “sportiness.” She has reconciled herself to the partying aspect, as it seems about even at both colleges. She is wondering if Bates has a lot of really sporty kids. She is quiet and creative. She much prefers small groups to big parties. She thinks she will like the kids at Kenyon. She knows that Bates kids are socially aware, a little more diverse, and pretty outgoing. So will she fit in with them? Where would the “cool” kid go to college: Bates or Kenyon? Haha!
Yesterday, to refresh her memory, she spent a lot of time on niche which is a good source for student perspectives. The two colleges are similar in many ways. She knows the academics are great at both. She loves the May short term at Bates, but she doesn’t love that she has to do a year of phys ed. That is very minor though. Bates is a little bigger, with a 50-50 gender balance, a very good thing. As far as her dad and I are concerned, I believe she will have more job opportunities on the East Coast, whereas Kenyon will likely lead to more job opportunities in the Midwest. I think both colleges will have good opportunities regarding internships and careers.
OMG OMG OMG!!! They just called the house looking for her, and she is out doing a driving lesson. Quick folks, feedback! @Sue22 , help:-)
Say “We found out this morning, and she’s out for a driving lesson, could you call back in about one hour”?
Then call her and say to come back ASAP.
There’s no wrong choice.
It sounds like at this poin she likes Kenyon better, but of course it was before Bates sent that email.
No! Don’t call during the driving lesson! Driver distraction is a leading cause of accidents. Really, it can wait, but I don’t think Lindagaf meant that kind of help anyway. It sounds like there is no wrong choice, and it needs to be all up to your daughter at this point.
I like this real time update. Good luck!
@travelerfromtx , no worries, I didn’t call during the driving lesson, too funny!
@MYOS1634 , she is back and she’s freaking out! This is very exciting!
^I assumed she was taking a lesson with a parent, whom Lindagaf would have called.
Time to re-read the entires on both in whaever guides you had, and see if one “speaks” to her more.
You can ask for time - romise a response on Tuesday?
