Where do you find your EFC

I have no idea where my expected family contribution is. I already got my financial aid report, but it doesn't seem to be on it or I am just not seeing it. Can someone tell me how to find it?

Did you get the email from Fasfa after completing the fasfa? It should be on that.

About four to six weeks after you submit the FAFSA (2-3 weeks for FAFSA on the Web), you will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR summarizes the information you provided on the FAFSA, and indicates the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

Never mind I just found it. Thank you for the help, but now I have a new problem. My EFC seems to be about 40K… ■■■.

How is it possible that the cost of attendance is lower than my EFC?!

Look at the cost of stony brook…it is lower than your EFC.

The first column is NYS resident costs

Cost of Attendance

2014-2015 Estimated Yearly Cost for Full-Time Undergraduates*

** Health insurance is required of all full-time students; waivers are available to domestic students who already have health insurance. International students must enroll in the International Student Health Insurance Plan; estimated cost is approximately $1,100.

*** Costs may vary depending on meal plan and housing options selected. Double dorm room and Silver Meal plan were used to calculate above meal and housing plans. All undergraduates living on campus are required to enroll in a meal plan for their first two semesters.

**** Costs dependent on course schedule. Additional course fees may apply to offset the costs of chemicals, supplies, materials and maintenance associated with particular courses.

Your EFC is your estimated family contribution…the cost is lower than that, so you are basically a full pay student…your only financial aid would be the unsubsidized student loan. I think for freshman year it is 5500.00, sophomore year 6500.00, junior and senior year 7500.00.

Yes, you’re right, I did get an unsubsidized loan. But what I don’t understand is that since the cost of attendance is around 20K, why does my family need to pay 40K per year? Further more, I have 9000 in fin aid, so I can subtract that from the cost of the 20K. I’m sorry if I seem stupid, but this is all kind of new to me.

No it’s not stupid. You do not need to pay your EFC if the total cost is below that. The EFC is what your need is based on. So for example, your. EFC is 40,000.00. Per year. The schools will attempt to give you financial aid of any cost above that 40,000.00. Stony Brook cost yearly is below your EFC so they can still give you something, in addition to the student loan which is offered to everyone. If they gave you 9000.00 you must have gotten some kind of grant from them which is great. So your parents would have to pay 20,000.00 per year, estimated cost, minus the student loan if you take it, and the grant they gave you, which was 9000.00 so you will be paying 11000.00per year.

Thank you so much for explaining this to me. And yes I did receive scholarships so you were right on that too. This really put my nerves to rest. Thanks again.

You are welcome! And best of luck to you!
