I'm a junior, and I'm starting research with 2 professors next semester. If all goes well, I will do some good work in those research positions. I did do some research for one of these professors fresh-soph years, but I was working with a scientist who was working part time, and it turned out that neither of us were very committed to the project, and not a lot of results were produced. So forget fresh soph year research.

My plan is go get 2 letters from these 2 research professors. Where would the 3rd one come from, and how do I make sure they're good ones?

Generally, addcoms want to see letters of rec from people you have done research for, if possible. You didn’t say what your area of study is but for example: I am an engineering student so I am getting my third letter from the lab director of my department (you may have taken classes with labs?). I haven’t done research with her, per se, but she has seen me do lab work and that’s almost research sort of haha. Otherwise, I think plenty of people round out their LORs with a professor they impressed or something like that.
