This board has been pretty quiet since early July - where have you all gone - next years candidates are out there - and I am sure will be needing your help and support - must all be on vacation - uuummmmm

HAAAA well 41 folks have taken a peek LOL

JeepMOM, as it sounds like you are a mom who probably has a kid in college,
I was wondering what you find appealing about Washington and Lee University.

I want to know this because right now I am in the thick of transfer application season and am not content with the schools that I am going to apply to for this spring.

Thanks,
Mac

MDURKES - take a look a page back at the top - An Alum's Parents Perspective............ that will answer some of your questions. I have a kiddo all done/W&L - thru masters/UofIL/UNH - and one a junior in college - tho not at W&L.

What type of schools in particular are you looking at for transfer?? And what specifically are you not happy about at your present school??

JeepMOM, we all migrated, first to myspace, now to facebook.

If I'm not too busy and if I don't forget, I'll try to come back here in the fall to help next year's crop of prospective students.

AAWWWW DIMA - and the beat goes on......... LOL

I am sure your help and support will be greatly appreciated - OOOOOO and good luck this year - enjoy your college experience to the max.

class of 2010 of course, applying reg decision.
don't have enough stats (no SAT/ACT scores as of now) yet to ask for chances, but for anyone curious enough:

-GPA is around 90.2
-only taken one SAT II but did get a 800
-took some A.P tests and got 4, 5 and even a 3 (cancel?)
-big on politics, did internships/campaigns for senators, city councilmembers, state assemblymembers-you name it & i was prob involved in some way.
-also big on theater/visual arts, produced school plays, have some acrylic painting works, etc.
-horrible with math/science but ironically am working in Columbia U right now on a homeland security physics project(actually quite interesting and also has some social science relations.) i suppose i shall construct a paper & submit it to the Intel/Westinghouse, we'll see what happens...
-international student, but ive been living in nyc for about 6 years
-asian, female, most likely political science major (williams school?)

hmm i don't know why i just typed all that bc my real question is about the campus visit/interview. i'm actually heading down this friday wooohooo & conviently scheduled for an interview-any tips? i know it'll prob be casual but still, i'd love any advice/quirky past experiences. feel free to comment on anything really and enjoy the remaining days of summer everyone!

Middle-class white girl from suburban/rural Pennsylvania.

SATS: 1340- old
2030- new (boo...SATs shafted me.)

ACTS: 32 composite
34 writing

Our school doesn't rank until the beginning of senior year, but I know I'm in the top 5% (we have an awards banquet), and in at least the top half of that...
so somewhere around 7/302

GPA around 4.4 (weighted, it's so conviluted that I can't decipher an un-weighted, I'd estimate around 3.7-3.8)

I've taken most of the AP classes that my school has to offer, about 75-80% of them. I've taken all the honors classes that have been available in the subject area. I have 4 years of the same foreign language (Latin)

Extracurrics-
...National Honor Society (Treasurer)- 11,12 (only available 11,12)
...International Thespian Society- 11,12
...Future Business Leaders of America- 11, 12 (chapter started my junior yr)
...Teenage Republicans of York (Vice President)- 10, 11, 12
...York Republican Center Volunteer
...Varsity Soccer
...School paper opinion editor
...Target employee (yeah, lame, I know- but I've been there over a year, and had 2 promotions...haha)

I'm not sure if I left anything out...Anyway...seems like the poster above and myself are the only ones who frequent this thing...so POST people, POST!

Thank ya! :)

ahhaa, well, let's hope someone comes back for us ='[

in the meantime, here's my advice (not that it's worth anything...):

i think you and i both should study our @sses off 'til OCT 8th, retake the damn SAT I and pray that we get 700+ on all sections/break 2100. how does that sound to you my dear? ;]

btw, what do you do in the 'international thespian society' ?

Sounds like a good plan to me :)

International Thespian Society- I build sets for the school musicals; sounds so butch, but I swear it's not, haha.

October 8th I'm taking SAT IIs in American History & Math (debating between I and II...any advice?)

The November date (I forget what it is..) I'm signed up for regular ol' SATs. I hope W&L just overlooks my SAT inferiority and takes my ACTs and realizes that I'm amazing and they should take me :) haha

Have you been to visit W&L??

Hey Y'all--

Well, I am W&L '09 and would be happy to answer any questions if I can. We haven't actually gotten to campus, yet, so I don't know how helpful I'll be. Ibleedorangeandblue: when I went to interview everyone was incredibly warm and welcoming. I was actually kind of astounded because I was so accustomed to finding a "what have you done lately?" attitude at a lot of other schools, so W&L's friendliness was a huge draw for me. The interview was in no way an interrogation-- I chatted for a while with Erin Hutchinson, the admissions officer, about her college experience and family. Everyone is very warm. The thing I noticed most about other students at W&L is that they are very approachable and genial, and I really think they look for that in their students. Good luck! I hope you love it as much as I did!
I don't really feel comfortable making projections about y'all's chances of getting in, etc, because admissions can be very subjective. I guess just do your best to get your test scores in range of W&L's average and then really work hard on your essays. I don't know how much this factored in one way or another, but I think that especially at a southern school like W&L that values traditions and southern gentility, handwritten thank you notes are important. Much better to stick out for being the kid who took the time to say thanks than as the only one who didn't. Good luck, you guys! I am so excited to start (we move in on Sunday). Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

~*~

One resource that may help any prospective class of 2010'ers can be found here: http://admissions.wlu.edu/web/page/normal/191.html. That page is the freshmen class profile for my class (09). Looks like you fall into the middle 50% for both SAT's and ACT czechitout, but each class seems to get more and more selective, so there's no harm in trying to bring those scores up while you have time.

To echo what Tegan said, the interview is extremely casual and very comfortable. WnL admissions officers are truly ambassadors of southern hospitality. Your best bet is to be honest and friendly. Speak to them as you would a good friend or relative. If you worry about being impressive, you'll probably come across as pedantic or pretensious, two qualities that are not appreciated at WnL. Try to highlight your passions/major interests, especially those outside the classroom. The handwritten thank you note is also a nice touch that I would highly recommend.

hey everyone,

firstly, thanks for all the great advice, really appreciate it. count on me buggin' in the next few months, ahah.
anyhow, just came back from W&L. looonnngggg 7 hr drive from nyc but completely worth it, i'd advise any 2010ers to take a look. like you guys said, the interview was very casual and informative. personally, i feel that i left a good impression (i hope anyway). info sessions and tours were awesome as well. W&L really is the quintessential campus, pretty-except the dorms, weren't too crazy about the ones that i saw but that's not really an important factor.
liked the town of lexington-veryveryvery different from nyc but the folks there are incredibly kind--a little iffy about the VMI guys, but eh, whatever, it was only one person lols. i think i have some pics left over in my digicam of W&L, if anyone's curious, be my guest...

does anyone have anything to say about how generous W&L is in terms of fin aid (i totally understand its diff w/ everyone, but still...)? that's probably the only thing i didn't get a solid answer to from my trip. ahh sorry about the long rant and hope to speak to you guys soon.

I'm not a WnL student but I'm prospective for 2010 and have discussed aid a lot with my family/the school. The way WnL works is that they have an extremely large endowment (thanks alums!) and very few students who need it. I think the endowment is around 800 and only about 40% of the student body is on aid. It's nice to know because it insinuates that it'll be easy enough to get enough aid if you need it. The Associate Dean of Admin told my mom that they look for students who need aid, that it's not a deterrant, if that's helpful. Something about leveling the socioeconomic backgrounds of the students to be more equal.

that def helps, when did you visit W&L?
