did that in quite a hurry, 5 days and nights. thinking that will be selected. Hindi medium guy, fin not sound, extracurricular and super strong recommendations

@jaipur: Don’t think colleges look well upon Hindi medium unless you have very high SAT and TOEFL scores. Also, they probably will scrutinize your essays more to ensure that you can cope in college.

Ahhh. Your generalizations are so wrong. Why would a college look down on a student from a Hindi medium school provided he/she has the set of requirements for applying? Meeting the standards of acceptance, however, is still another issue.

Have checked the Stats Profiles for last year on this site. That would give you a fairly good idea where you stand. As for as fin aid is concerned, no body can tell, that is more like a lottery:)

If a college had to pick between two students, equal in most respects, save that one attended an English medium school for his/her whole life, and the other a Hindi (or any other Indian language) medium school, which student do you think they would swing towards? And, statistically, it is a given that an English medium school would produce a student with better essays, and higher scores in tests conducted in English.

I think the fact that would be more relevant to this discussion would be since english is the language of communication both for academics as well as outside the classroom hence the degree of comfort and understanding (language) will play a factor in tilting the balance when two applications are same in all other aspects.

I’d say I am a slightly above average applicant for most of these universities. 2200 SAT, 700 Math II (stop judging me!), 780 Physics, 92% 10th, 70% 11th, am hoping to get 90+ in 12th.

Mine is simple list
ELECTRICAL ENGG
National university of Singapore
University of British Columbia
University of Toronto
Nayang technological university
University of Minnesota
Hong Kong university of science and technology[ got firm acceptance with scholarship]

The average SAT score for Berkeley EECS is ~2250 and the admission is publicly known to be far more selective than for other majors. For L&S CS, it is much lower so I’d assume you’ve applied for that.

False.

Berkeley offers aid from sophomore year onwards to internationals if they demonstrate outstanding academic achievement. The amount, though, is not substantial.
You could very well land a job and work your way through living expenses.

False.

EECS/CSE/ECE definitely makes the list for the hardest majors, at any top engineering school. If you disagree, I suggest you take any of the equivalents of Berkeley’s CS 164 (Compilers), CS 162 (Operating Systems) or CS 170 (Algorithms) at your university.
I’m sure any of those would surely succeed in changing that outlook. ;)

 I didn’t know that! Thanks for telling me Also, would you mind telling me something else? I applied to UCB for MechE. Would there be a way to know the average SAT score for MechE majors? I know it’s a very naive question, since admissions decisions are based on more than SAT scores, but I would like to know just to satisfy my curiosity :p
