Curious to know about the study abroad experiences of the kids of other parents here. My D is currently a freshman, so study abroad is a ways off yet, but she thinks she would like to spend a semester or a year in China.

My D just spent fall semester at University of Edinburgh and LOVED it! She went through Butler University, which runs a great program that many schools use.

My S is a junior at the University of Denver and studied at the University of Maastricht last semester as a Cherrington Scholar. Absolutely loved it, academically and every other way. Academics were top notch as was the entire experience. He travelled all over with friends he made at the program.

DS did a semester at the Royal College of Music. It was a fabulous experience.

Both S1 and D studied abroad, S in London and D in Vienna. Both programs were through the University of Chicago, their home university. They both enjoyed their academic programs, but more than anything they loved the travel and adventure. S2 chose not to study abroad, but spent part of a summer on an archeological dig in Uzbekistan and loved it.

S did a year at Complutense in Madrid, loved it. He lives there now. D did last semester at UEA-UK, loved it. Is in Madrid for this semester, loving it as well. much cheaper than their schools here for a year. All merit/FA went.

It’s never too early to prepare. Good for your D!

D did study abroad her junior year in Dresden, Germany. She had taken several years of German and really wanted use it. She enjoyed traveling all over Europe with her new friends (all Americans studying at the same Dreden university). She didn’t like Dresden, however. It is in east Germany and is kind of depressing. However, most of the German kids her age did not speak English, unlike the west Germans, so her German improved a lot.

Salamanca and Madrid, Spain for language immersion. Both great.

Glad to hear that your kids’ experiences have gone well. My son will soon be going, and I’m a little concerned.

My daughter’s semester abroad was Buenos Aires, Beijing, Shanghai, and Bangalore with homestays everywhere but Shanghai. She loved loved it, although it was very challenging experience.

I loved getting the occasional e-mail except the one saying she was going parasailing in the Andes mountains the next day.

DD studied abroad in Armenia and Chile and Turkey; also spent time in China - but working, not studying. Chile and Turkey were great. She had reservations about the pollution in China - air quality was awful.

D did Geneva (10 days), India, China, & South Africa. Program run by same outfit as for interesteddad’s D. Homestays everywhere except Geneva. Phenomenal, life-changing experience. No parasailing; just shark-diving on Easter.

Both S1 and S2 did a semester at the University of Otago in New Zealand. For S1, I think it was a life-changing experience.

My son participated in a short (one month) study abroad in Spain and Portugal, and he had a very positive experience. But I prayed for his health and safety daily, and was so happy to see him come through the doors at the airport!

kelsmom, I sent you a pm.

Not quite “study abroad” in the traditional sense, but in the summer of 2006 I worked at EPFL (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne), in this guy’s lab: [The real Frankenstein experiment: One man’s mission to create a living mind inside a machine | Mail Online](<a href=“The real Frankenstein experiment: One man's mission to create a living mind inside a machine | Daily Mail Online”>The real Frankenstein experiment: One man's mission to create a living mind inside a machine | Daily Mail Online)

It went really well. I enjoyed Switzerland and got a nice recommendation letter out of it.

I had one study in Santander, Spain and one in Aix-en-Provence, France. Both did homestays and had great experiences. My youngest is looking at programs now.

Thanks for this thread! My D will be going to college this fall, waiting for decisions, but she is looking forward to study abroad wherever she ends up at.
I do have a suggestion: Please add the name of the college here in the US and abroad, and also if they were able to transfer the FA abroad.

My daughter spend a semester in London through the Dannenberg Oberlin-in-London program (in partnership with Grinnell). She rented a flat with some other Oberlin students, from an English professor who was on sabbatical elsewhere. The focus of the curriculum changes from term to term. When she attended, the focus was history & art history, which was perfect for her. Also, the experience of traveling throughout Europe without parents, was terrific. When else does one have a chance to go to Krakow?

My D did a summer in and around Galway, Ireland, doing language immersion in Irish (lived with a predominately Irish-speaking family). Was a fantastic experience for her.
