I'm from Iowa which might make a difference.....
I'm a decent writer but not amazing and I'm struggling with this whole college essay thing

Right now I'm looking at Stanford, Yale, Penn, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, UVa, USC, Michigan, and Wisconsin... I would like to major in business, economics, intl relations, intl business, or something of the like....
I'm just at a loss as to where I can get in, I know some places are more of a reach than others so I was just wondering what some others thought. or if anyone has suggestions of places I should look. Let me know.

oh and wait. I'm a white female.
I work at the YMCA and teach swim lesssons and lifeguard, about 20 hrs/week in the summer and about 5 in the winter....
We don't get rankings until after senior year starts but I'm guessing I'm in the top 10 of about 350-400 kids (top 5%)

Stanford: Reach
Yale: Reach
Penn: Reach
Georgetown: Low Reach
Vanderbilt: High Match
UVa: High Match
USC: Match
Michigan: High Match
Wisconsin: Match

If possible, you could send your art portfolio to the art dept. as a supplement.

Stanford is a BIG reach.

well yeah, im not saying i expect to get it, its just where i'm looking. i'm basically wondering if it would be a humiliation to even try? and also the places i actually have a chance

It'll never be a humiliation as long as you do try. Your greatest loss is probably not trying in the first place. Sure, your SAT is a bit low, but your ACT seems ok and your grades and ECs are pretty decent too. You definitely have a shot at quite a few of those colleges you listed. Of course, Stanford won't be an easy in by any means, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try.

Chance me back?

Michigan and Wisconsin but not Iowa? Seems a shoe-in for you there.

Still, the only change I would make from collegebound's list is that I would make Georgetown a reach. They might love an Iowan !

well yeah i'm applying to uiowa, i just didn't put it there. i don't really want to go there and i figured its a safety (i hope)

You should look at Dartmouth, Duke, Amherst, and Brown. You might have some success in that range if you don't submit SAT scores and just submit the ACT.

Brown is a good fit for your community service stuff; they like that. SAT II's?

Georgetown reach.

I'd also apply to Notre Dame--you seem to be an excellent fit for them.

Also, how good are your swim times? Stanford is a real big force in the world of competitive swimmers. If you are good enough or can improve enough, this would give you chances there. Santa Clara and UCLA also are big in this area--and you could possibly get scholarships to cover the cost.

I must admit, I'm slightly at a loss as well. I mean, I have made a list of a couple colleges, but none of them are dream, perfect match colleges or anything like that. -.-

i dont think i'm good enough to swim in college/don't want to
yeah..... i have some ideas but im scared i won't get in anywhere.

damn ap physics. it's the only B I ever got too.
