Where should I go? Universities in the East

Temple, Drexel, U of Maryland (might be a lil challenging)
and if u want to aim higher..
NewYorkUniversity

Don’t go to Ohio University. Even here in Ohio, kids don’t want to go there. It’s a huge party school in the middle of nowhere, and it’s only saving grace is it’s respectable journalism program.

And Sports Management.

University of Miami has the medium size, near a big city, very diverse but smart kids, good business program, musicians come to campus and play around campus in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale venues, politically involved, gorgeous campus full of cafes (the Rat has outdoor tables overlooking the lake that swing back and forth), lots of bars and restaurants nearby, lots of student activities and a college campus community since the college in in Coral Gables, a residential area near the city.

You may have to up your gpa a little and SAT score a bit though and consider applying ED or EA.

jbuckel08,

I go to Drexel University, and I think most of your criteria fits here. Hopefully I can give you a good representation:

-Outside NYS (Philadelphia is outside!)

-Philadelphia

-Medium sized school 8000-18000 undergrads (Don’t have the figure, but I’m sure Drexel is in that range. Its definetely not as crowded.)

-Diverse, but surrounded by “smart kids”, Not all preps, not all artsy kids…I want a big mix (There are plenty of majors here, so the campus is mixed.)

-A larger Girl/Guy ratio (It’s not 50/50, but there is plenty of potentials, especially with the Fashion Design majors.)

-Good Business program (LeBow is seriously improving every year. If you want more information on what I’ve done so far, send me a PM.)

-Politically aware (We hosted a Democratic debate for Clinton/Obama which aired live on NBC.)

-Musicians come to campus frequently (There is the World Cafe, where there are live performances all the time.)

-Good Campus, Large, full of cafes, a big quad, many places to study around campus, wireless access everywhere, restaurants nearby, many bars around (There are cafes, with a Starbucks in the business building. The central quad was just recently rebuilt last year. Plenty of study spots on campus. Drexel was the first wireless campus in the US. There are a TON of restaurants - I recommend Pizza Rustica. And lastly, there are plenty of Bars…you’ll have no problem finding them - I recommend New Deck.)

-Drinking? What turned me off about BU is that i hear drinking is a problem on campus, I do not want that to be an issue, I want a place where I can have fun and party on campus (Drinking isn’t the biggest problem on campus, but they do enforce some measures. Greek life is regularly monitored, but alcohol is permitted.)

-I want good profs, and the classes to be large at first, but smaller as i progress into sophomore, junior year, etc. Lectures to be large (The intro classes are large, as is in other colleges. As you progress, they get smaller with 30 being a good average figure. Professors are helpful and knowleable, but I can’t say that all were wonderful. You’ll face this problem anywhere you decide to attend…one thing to note is that profs from PENN/Wharton do teach here as well.)

-Not amazingly hard to get into, but a university that accepts 45-65% (Drexel has a 70% acceptance rate, but I know this will drop in the coming years significantly.)

-Nice dorms, a “small community” (Freshman dorms are fun here. I had a blast my freshman year. In addition, a lot of students move to UCROSS after freshman year. I wouldn’t say theres a small community, but there are so many groups/clubs that you will find a place to fit in quickly.)

-Many student activities, students are involved (As mentioned before, there are plenty of groups/clubs to choose from.)

I can’t say Drexel is perfect, but it has been a great experience thus far. I’m heading into my last year this September, and I do look forward to returning to classes. I think the 5-year co-op system works wonderfully, as there are plenty of internship opportunities.

Lastly, Drexel was ranked 89 by USNEWS, moving 19 slots up from last year. We are ranked 6 for ‘up & coming’ colleges. I do feel this school will be highly ranked once I graduate, and you can physically see the improvements year to year.

Any other questions, feel free to PM.

Drexel is 57% male, which is one of (if not the) highest percentage of males at any university…

TUOwls2011,

Your point? I’ve got Temple campus to tap into, as well as the cuties at PENN. Not to mention all the libral arts schools around Philly. Never had a bad night out at Old City.

If you choose a school based on the percentage of Males/Females, you clearly don’t a) have any game, or you’re b) way too self conscious.

My point is that you clearly were not aware that Drexel is notorious for being a sausage fest.

Mr. TUOwls2011,

Lets take a step back, and actually comprehend what you are saying.

“Drexel is 57% male, which is one of (if not the) highest percentage of males at any university…”

You sir, did not properly conduct your own due diligence. Rose-Hulman is 80%, while RPI (Rennselear, if didn’t know) has 70%. MIT I’m willing to bet isn’t all that great as well. How could Drexel possibly be “(if not the) highest percentage of males at any university…”

Your next post:

“My point is that you clearly were not aware that Drexel is notorious for being a sausage fest.”

And you, my dear Owl, are clearly not aware that I am in my last year. (Which if you would read my post above, I clearly state.) So how, may I ask, can I be “clearly not aware” of the populus on campus? Those who say Drexel is a “sausage fest” have not went to the right places, or hang out with, well, sausages.

Look, if you have something against Drexel, that’s completely fine with me. But lets not make blind statements and false accusations. I’m sure they teach you how to reason and argue at Temple, right?

You could at least try to insult me better than that…
