Where To Sing?

Hello :) I am a homeschooled sophomore, and I have been taking voice lessons for almost two years. Where are good places to perform and sing?

Churches, retirement homes/assisted living facilities, local libraries, community choirs, community theaters (if you are interested in musical theater). Also, what does your voice teacher say?

Ask your teacher if there are any regional NATS competitions that you might prepare for and compete in.

^^^^also Classical Singer magazine runs competitions for high school age students.

It’s too late for this year, but have you considered auditioning for any summer programs? For example, Tanglewood Institute, Interlochen, Walnut Hill, Washington National Opera,Oberlin, etc? Most summer programs will provide you with a performance opportunity at the end such as a recital and opera scenes.

You can also look for open mics (open microphones, sometimes also called open Mikes) in local libraries, bakeries, coffee shops and other locations. They are things where anyone can come and practice performing with low risk. The audience is usually the other performers, some locals, and and relatives or friends that tag along. At some you have to sign up ahead of time and at others you go there and add your name to a list and perform when its your turn. Usually anything goes … you can sing solo (a cappella, no accompaniment), play piano or guitar w/ yourself, or bring a friend to accompany you. The worse thing that can happen is that just a few people clap instead of a standing ovation, so it is a very safe environment to practive performing in front of people.

Ask around and see what venues host these. To get comfortable, attend one without performing, and then sign up when you’re brave enough to share with the world.
